PREVIEW - G3 - USF Football will host Concordia St. Paul on Military Appreciation Day

Cougars will try and earn its 73rd win all-time at Bob Young Field

SIOUX FALLS -- After a solid road win when the offense and defense both clicked, the University of Sioux Falls Football Team (1-1, 0-0 NSIC) will host Concordia St Paul (1-1, 0-0 NSIC) in a North-South Division match-up at 1:00 pm on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Bob Young Field. Fans can also tune into the radio broadcast on KWSN with veteran announcer Tom Frederick and analyst Tim Hiatt with sideline reporter Chad Birger.

Saturday is Military Appreciation Day at the Bob
On Saturday, it will be Military Appreciation Day when active and retired military members will receive free admission with a valid Military ID and get $5 off tickets for their families. The game sponsor is Pepsi. 

Cougars will look for 453rd all-time win
Beginning in 1902 and continuing into the 21st century, the program has thrived on high expectations through a rich tradition heaped in excellence. The Cougars have 452 wins (452-418-20), 26 consecutive winning seasons and have earned postseason NCAA DII playoff berths in four of the last five seasons. It is a program that has four national NAIA championships and 20 conference crowns including the 2016 team that was unbeaten in NSIC play.

At Stake
The Cougars, directed by fifth year head coach Jon Anderson (25-12 overall, 25-11 in the NSIC), and Bears both come into the game off victories. The Cougars rolled past Minot State, 49-10, as Adam Mullen threw for three TDs and 199 yards while Thuro Reisdorfer recorded his second straight 100-yard rushing game of the season and seventh of his career after gaining 124 yards on 16 carries and TDs of two and 44 yards. The Bears, who moved to the NSIC North Division as part of the league shift after Minnesota Crookston and St. Cloud State discontinued football in 2020. The Bears had a 24-6 home win at Sea Foam Stadium on Sept. 11. This will be USF's third of fourth North Division games this season. The Cougars travel to Northern State on Sept. 25 for a 6 pm clash with their in-state foes. With a 49-10 win at Minot State on Sept. 11, the Cougars improved to 8-1 against MiSU with its eighth straight win over the Beavers since a 20-13 loss in 1994 in the NAIA playoffs. USF is now 35-10 in NSIC road games with a 29-5 cross divisional mark, which includes a 14-3 road mark.

Cougars have a long tradition of winning football
USF has had at least six wins in every season in the NSIC and a winning run in DII of nine years, including 5-4 in the transition year from NAIA to DII in 2011.  The Cougars began NSIC play in 2012 and had a 9-2 mark while earning their first DII ranking (as high as No. 17). In 2014 USF opened 10-0 (11-1 overall) and later advanced to the Mineral Water Bowl, which they won 42-10 over Central Oklahoma of the MIAA. The Cougars earned their first NCAA DII playoff berth in 2015 (9-3 season) and won the NSIC with an unbeaten record (11-0, 12-1 overall). In 2016, USF earned a first-ever DII playoff win with a 34-21 win over Azusa Pacific as USF advanced to Sweet 16 in 2016. In 2017, the Cougars had the league's top defense and was ranked in the top five nationally in a 9-3 season which included another playoff berth in Anderson's first season as head coach. In 2018, the Cougars finished 7-4 with a 5-2 mark tied for second in the NSIC South. In 2019, USF was 8-4 with a 4-3 record in the South but earned a NCAA DII postseason bid for the second time in three years with Coach Anderson at the helm.

USF leads all-time series with CSP, 12-2  
USF has won 12 games of 14 games in the series. After the Golden Bears won the first-ever meeting (24-16) in 1971, the Cougars started a 12-game winning streak with a 44-6 decision in 1972. However, CSP had a 41-17 win in 2019 in the last meeting of the two schools.

Quick Review - USF rolls past Minot State
With redshirt freshman quarterback Adam Mullen tossing three TD passes and junior running back Thuro Reisdorfer rushing for two scores, plus a stout defensive performance, the University of Sioux Falls Football Team (1-1) earned a 49-10 road win at Minot State on Sept. 11.  USF Head Coach Jon Anderson won his 25th game at USF, which places him fourth all-time on USF's career coaching chart. The Cougars rolled up 462 yards in total offense on 62 plays or 7.45 yards per play. The USF ground attack generated 252 yards on 37 carries while USF had 210 yards through the air. For the second straight week, Reisdorfer surpassed 100 yards rushing as he had 16 carries for 124 yards and two TDs (2, 44). He now has 274 yards in the first two weeks and has surpassed 1,500 yards (1,527) rushing in his career. In the passing game, Mullen had a second straight solid outing by completing 19-of-23 passes for a career-best 192 yards and a career-high three TDs.. Jaqueze Lockett added nine carries for 72 yards and Landon Freeman had seven carries for 23 yards. The receiving corps was led by senior wide receiver Dominic Pegley, who had five catches for 94 yards (career-high at USF) while redshirt freshman Trevon Brown had four catches for 41 yards and his first receiving score – 16-yard TD reception. Also, Tavian Tumbleson (18-yards), Sean Zsori (10 yards) and Carter Slykhuis (13 yards) all caught their first TD passes at USF. On defense, Cameron Alfaro had seven tackles in his first game in a USF uniform while Harvey Enalls added five stops and now has 144 in his career. With a strip sack and four tackles, Joey Wehrkamp now has 10 career sacks and 22 TFLs. Bryce Jackson had his first career interception and Dorian Fedrick also had a pick for USF, which had a plus-three turnover margin with a blocked punt leading to an 18-yard TD return by Dom Pegley.

How USF stands after two games - stat review
Through two games, USF is averaging 32.5 points and 407.5 yards in total offense per game or 6.2 yards per play. T USF is averaging 209.5 rushing yards  (2nd in the NSIC) and 198 passing yards per game.  The Cougars ranks fourth in the league with 32.5 points per game and with 16.0 points allowed per game also sit fourth. USF is also seventh in the NSIC in total offense at 407.5 yards per game. USF junior running back Thuro Reisdorfer ranks first in the NSIC in rushing with 274 yards per game on 38 carries or an averaging of 137.0 per game. He has games of 150 and 124 yards in his first two weeks.  Senior Dominic Pegley has 13 receptions for 166 yards or 84.0 per game, which ranks 11th in the league.  Through two games, USF has interceptions from Dorian Fedrick and Bryce Jackson. Sophomore linebacker Cody Jantzen leads USF in tackles with 13 or 6.5 per game. He has seven solo stops. Redshirt freshman linebacker Noah Schmitt has 11 tackles including a team-best 10 solo stops. 

Concordia St. Paul sits 1-1 through two weeks 
Directed by Head Coach Shannon Courier, Concordia St. Paul is 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC through two games this season. The last time, USF and CSP met, the Bears took a 41-17 win in St. Paul, Minn., to break a 12-game losing skein to the Cougars They defeated Upper Iowa, 24-6 in their home opener after taking a 47-6 setback against Winona State (2-0) in week one on the road. QB Connor Cordts has completed 45-of-67 passes for 379 yards and two TDs. Jaylin Richardson is leading the rushing attack with 63 yards on 18 carries with a TD. Nathan Gimza has a team-high nine receptions for 72 yards but no TDs. On the season CSP is averaging 261.0 yards in total offense (3.9 ypp) with 71.5 rushing yards per game. 
USF Captains - Enalls, Reisdorfer, Wehrkamp and Smith
Head Football Coach Jon Anderson announced the team captains for the 2021 season. The captains, selected by vote of the team, include seniors Ty Smith, Harvey Enalls, Joey Wehrkamp and junior Thuro Reisdorfer, all of Sioux Falls. The four standouts helped lead USF to the program's fourth NCAA DII playoff appearance in five seasons in 2019 when the Cougars recorded an 8-4 overall mark. USF registered its 26th straight winning season, which is the fourth-longest across all divisions in the NCAA.

Player Notes -- Ty Smith approaching 1,000 yards in receiving
Ty Smith,, who is enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program at USF, is a senior wide receiver. He has accumulated 68 catches for 949 yards and four TDs. Smith, who has 25 games played with 23 starts, has had at least two catches in a game 16 times and recorded 80 yards or more in receiving yards four times. He has a pair of 100-yard receiving games with a high of 110 yards on five receptions and a TD against Minnesota State in 2018. He had his career-high with eight catches (94 yards) against Upper Iowa in 2018. Smith is a three-time Academic All-NSIC  honoree and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from USF in May 2020. In 2021, Smith has recorded three catches for 22 yards.

Harvey Enalls goes past 140 career tackles
Enalls, a two-time All-NSIC honoree, has accumulated 143 career tackles, including 85 solo stops, at USF. Named second-team All-NSIC in 2019, he has 12.5 career tackles for loss and 8.5 career sacks with five fumble recoveries. During his career, Enalls, who was honorable mention All-NSIC in 2018, has had at least two tackles in a game 27 times with four or more tackles in a game 19 times. A force in the middle of USF's defense, he has had double-digit tackles with a career-high 13, including four solo stops, against Colorado School of Mines in the 2019 DII playoffs. A psychology and criminal justice major, Enalls has played in 34 games with 32 starts during his career. This season, he has nine tackles, seven solo stops and two pass breakups.

Joey Wehrkamp has 23 career tackles for loss 
Wehrkamp, a two-time Academic All-NSIC honoree, has been a staple in the USF defensive front for three-plus seasons. He has registered 37 starts with 100 career tackles of which 60 are solo stops. The senior defensive end has recorded 23.0 tackles for loss with 10 sacks. He has registered five career pass breakups, three passes defended and forced three fumbles. Nine times, he has had four or more tackles in a game from his defensive end position. He is enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program. This season, Wehrkamp has five totals with four solo stops to go with a team-high four tackles for loss and two sacks for -12 yards. He has a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a pass breakup. 

Thuro Reisdorfer moves past 1,500 yards rushing
After two weeks, junior running back Thuro Reisdorfer has 274 yards on 38 carries for 7.2 yards per carry and a 137.00 yards per game average. He is the leading rusher in the NSIC. As a result, the standout from Sioux Falls Washington has surpassed 1,500 yards (1,526 on 229 carries). He also has a pair of touchdowns - two and 44 yards (both against Minot State). In 2019, Reisdorfer earned All-NSIC honors (second team) after accumulating 1,150 rushing yards in 169 carries with 13 rushing TDs. He had 19 total TDs in making 11 starts in 12 games during USF's playoff season in 2019. He is one of the few players in school history to score three different ways on offense (rush/receiving/kickoff return). Reisdorfer, who is an exercise major, has 126 career points and was ranked in six rushing and scoring categories in NCAA DII in 2019. Reisdorfer ranked third in the NSIC in total rushing yards with 1,150, which was 17th in DII. He was second in the NSIC and 13th in DII in yards per carry at 6.8 while ranking third in the league and 31st in DII in rushing yards per game at 95.8 per game. His 19 TDs ranked second in the league and seventh in NCAA DII. In addition, he ranked fourth in the NSIC in all purpose yards with 1,474 or 122.8 per game (42nd nationally). Reisdorfer now has 11 games of 100 yards or more all purpose yards and seven games of 100 yards rushing or more. He set a career-high 171 yards rushing on 13 carries with two TDs against Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 19, 2019 and had a career-high 220 all-purpose yards. He also had 19 carries for 166 yards and two TDs in the NCAA DII playoffs against Colorado Mines on Nov. 23, 2019.   

Redshirt Freshman QB Adam Mullen off to solid start
Redshirt freshman Adam Mullen has had two career starts at USF and now has a 157.68 ranking after completing 33-of-48 passes for 351 yards and four TDs. He is averaging 1755 yards per game and completing 68.75 percent of his throws. Mullen is coming off his best game when he completed 18-of-22 passes for 192 yards with a TD. He also has a rushing TD (16 yds vs Bemidji State) and accounted for five TDs.
