USF Women's Basketball drops closely contested cross divisional battle to NSU, 60-59

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Danielle Schaub scored 11 points and Krystal Carlson had 10 but the University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball Team (11-6, 6-4 NSIC) dropped a closely contested 60-59 decision to Northern State (9-7, 6-5 NSIC) on Saturday in NSIC Women's Basketball cross-divisional play.

With the setback, the Cougars had a three-game winning streak stop as they dropped to 11-6 overall and 6-4 in the NSIC but retained second place in the South Division as Concordia St. Paul took a loss. USF sits a game and half out of the South Division lead where Minnesota State is 12-3 overall and 8-3. Next up for USF is a pair of home games against Bemidji State at 5:30 pm on Friday, Jan. 21 and against Minnesota Crookston at 3:30 pm on Saturday, Jan. 22. 

USF, which had a 33-29 lead at halftime, was outscored 31-to-26 in the second half as the Wolves rallied for the win.

USF was led by Schaub with 11 points as she was 3-of-7 from three-point range and added three rebounds. For Schaub, she now has 27 career double-digit games at USF and Concordia St. Paul with her fourth at USF.  The Cougars had a solid effort from Krystal Carlson, who had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists as she played just 18 minutes due to foul problems. Carlson had her 18th career double-digit scoring game.

Also for USF, junior guard Dallie Hoskinson had eight points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in 36 minutes on the floor. Madison Wuebben added seven points while Kiara James, Madison Birnbaum and Olivia Gamoke all supplied six points.

USF finished at 34.9 percent shooting (22-of-63) from the field and made 8-of-25 from the three-point range for 32 percent. The Cougars, which lost the rebound battle, 36-33, were 7-of-10 at the foul line. USF, which had a 19-to-15 margin in points off turnovers, also had an 11-to-8 margin in second-chance points. USF, which led 59-58 with 1:06 to play, had its largest lead of the game at 31-23 with 4:05 to play in the second quarter.

NSU was led by Laurie Rogers, who had a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds with six blocks. Rianna Fillipi supplied 17 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds for the Wolves which hit 23-of-54 field goals for 42.6 percent. They were 5-of-11 from three-point range and 9-of-12 at the foul line. NSU had 17 turnovers created in part by seven steals by USF.

Scoring Summary -
In the opening quarter, both teams had their moments on offense. USF, which had five points from Kiara James, hit 6-of-17 field goals for 35.3 percent and made 2-of-5 from three-point range while owning a 9-8 rebound edge. NSU was 6-of-12 from the field for 50 percent and made all three of its triples but committed six turnovers. 

Early in the first quarter, Fannin hit a three and now has one in every game this year as USF took a 7-6 lead with 6:22 to play. Then, James converted a lay-up and with the "and 1" gave USF a 10-6 advantage. After NSU rallied for an 11-10 lead, the Cougars had a three from Wuebben for a 13-11 lead at the 1:46 mark.

USF was just 7-of-21 for 33.3 percent in the second quarter but outscored, NSU, 16-12, to take a 33-29 lead to the halftime break.

Early in the second quarter, a field goal from Hoskinson gave USF a 19-17 lead. With a jumper from Gamoke, USF had a 7-2 run for a 26-21 lead with 5:38 to play. NSU cut the lead to 31-28 with 2:58 to play. By halftime, USF was 13-of-38 for 34 percent and had hit on 4-of-13 three-point shots.

In the second half, NSU outscored USF, 31-26. The turn in this game began in the third quarter when the Wolves had an 18-14 advantage. Key for the Wolves was hot shooting from the field as they made 9-of-16 for 56.3 percent. USF was just 5-of-13 for 38.5 percent but hit on 3-of-6 from the three-point range. In the third quarter, the Wolves opened on a 10-6 advantage to tie the game at 39 with 5:46 to play.  NSU took a 47-41 lead before a pair of triples later from Schaub created a 47-47 tie at the break.

In the fourth quarter, the game was close throughout. NSU had a 13-12 advantage and with it pulled out a one-point win. While USF was 4-of-12 for 33.3 percent (1-of-6 on threes for 16.7 percent), NSU was 6-of-15 for 40 percent. After USF took a 59-58 lead with 1:06 to play on Carlson's basket, Rogers answered for NSU on a jumper with 47 seconds left for a  60-59 lead, which held up when USF's shot in the final seconds was offline.
