USF Tennis moves to 2-0 with a 5-2 win over Minnesota Duluth

Cougars open NSIC season with win

DULUTH, MINN. -- The University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team (2-0, 1-0 NSIC) recorded four straight set wins in singles while sweeping doubles as the Cougars opened the NSIC schedule with a 5-2 win over Minnesota Duluth (1-3, 1-2 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon. 

USF, which will face St. Cloud State on Sunday morning in Duluth, Minn., won straight set singles matches at No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6. Senior Megan Quandt (2-0, 1-0) opened singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mallory Lithun. At No. 3, Danielle Thorfinnson (2-0, 1-0) also won in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-4 victory for her second straight win to open the season. Then, USF had wins from freshman Emily Thinnsen with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Amanda Hanowski while Katelyn Nasheim won, 6-2, 6-2 over Olivia Honsey at No. 6 singles. Both freshmen standouts moved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC.

In doubles, Quandt and Talia Janos earned a 6-3 win over Mallory Lithun and Shay Calloway of UMD at No. 1. Quandt and Janos moved to 2-0 on the season with a 1-0 mark in the NSIC. Also improving to 2-0 this season and 1-0 in the league was Danielle Thorfinnson and Joelle Thorfinnson who earned a 6-1 win at No. 2. The freshmen tandem of Thinnsen and Neshim took a 6-4 decision as they won for the second straight match.

"I am really proud of the work this group put in in preparation and then going out and executing shots on the court," said USF Head Coach Kevin Grebin. "It was great to see our team win key points and find a way to open the league with a win," he said.
