SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Freshman standouts
Emily Thinnsen and
Katelyn Nesheim both recorded wins in singles but the University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team (4-3, 3-3 NSIC) dropped a 5-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match to U-Mary (5-0, 5-0 NSIC) on Saturday (Feb. 26) at the Huether Family Match Pointe.
At No. 5 singles, Thinnsen registered a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Heidi Jacobson of U-Mary.
Katelyn Nesheim also took a 6-0, 6-4 straight set win at No. 6 singles to lead USF. With the victory, Nesheim moved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in NSIC action. Thinnsen is now 4-3 on the season with a 3-3 NSIC record.
After today, USF is now 22-20 in singles play with a 17-19 conference record. USF, which loss 2-of-3 matches at doubles and with it the point for a doubles point, now sit 14-7 in doubles this year with an 11-7 record in league play.
"I thought our team played tough and battled hard," said USF Head Coach
Kevin Grebin. "We had some opportunities but lost some big points. Now is time to get back to work and rebound when we compete down in Florida," he said.
At No. 1 doubles, USF took a 6-4 win as
Megan Quandt and
Talia Janos combined to move their record to 4-0 on the season with a 3-0 league mark. At No. 2 doubles, USF's
Peyton Forney and
Joelle Thorfinnson lost a 7-5 decision while Thinnsen/Nesheim fell at No. 3 doubles, 6-1.
In the singles play, Janos lost to Ilona Freitag, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 while
Megan Quandt fell at No. 1 by a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Chloe Chong. At No. 4, Emily Needham turned back USF's
Joelle Thorfinnson, 6-2, 6-0.
Next for USF will be the spring break trip to Orlando, Fla., on March 7-11. USF will play six matches beginning with Marywood on March 7.
