Paced by five wins in singles plus a sweep of doubles, USF Tennis improves to 8-5 with 6-1 win over Northwestern

Cougars will face DI Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday at 3 pm in Omaha, Neb.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Led by a sweep in singles and doubles, the University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team (8-5) rolled to a 6-1 nonconference win over Northwestern (Iowa) on Friday night at the Huether Family Match Pointe.

After going 3-2 on a Spring Break trip to Florida, the Cougars won for the fourth time in six matches with a 6-1 win. USF, which is now 5-2 in nonconference play, won five singles matches in straight sets and captured 18-of-20 games in three doubles competitions.

"It was another nice all-around effort by our team," said USF Tennis Head Coach Kevin Grebin, whose team will face DI Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday at 3 pm in Omaha, Neb. "We played smart efficient tennis all night. The effort was outstanding," he said.

At No. 1 Talia Janos moved to 5-6 on the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Julia Kutz of Northwestern. A sophomore, Janos also teamed at No. 1 doubles with senior Megan Quandt for a 6-2 win over Julia Kutz/Julia Anderson. With the victory Quandt/Janos improved to 6-1 on the season. Quandt now has an 8-1 record in doubles and Janos is 6-3.

USF also had wins at No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles. At No. 3 Joelle Thorfinnson improved to 5-6 on the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Wynne Vandersall. Playing at No. 3, Thorfinnson is 4-0 this season.

At No. 4 singles, freshman Emily Thinnsen defeated Ainslie Robinson, 6-2, 6-1 to improve to 6-5 on the season. Another freshman Katelyn Nesheim took a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jessica Wilson as she improved to a team-best 9-2 on the season.

Junior Peyton Forney played at No. 6 and came up with another win in a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Emma Montenegro. She is now 3-2 on the season.

At No. 2, sophomore Danielle Thorfinnson dropped to 4-7 as she lost a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (7-10) tiebreaker to Julia Anderson.

J. Thorfinnson and D. Thorfinson cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles against Vandersall/Robinson. With the victory, the Thorfinnson sisters improved to 5-2 on the season. In doubles this season, D. Thorfinnson is now 7-2 and J. Thorfinnson, 7-3, on the season.

At No. 3 doubles, Thinnsen and Nesheim earned a 6-0 win over Jessica Wilson and Grace Twelmeyer as they sit 4-4 on the season.
