SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – With five wins in singles contests and a sweep in doubles, the University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team (9-6, 4-3 NSIC) rolled to a 6-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over Minnesota Crookston (2-9, 0-8 NSIC) on Friday night (April 1) at the Huether Family Match Pointe.
With its fourth win in six matches, the Cougars moved to 4-3 in the NSIC with the victory over UMC. USF, which stands 9-6 overall, won five singles matches in straight sets and captured 18-of-24 games in winning three doubles competitions. In 2022, USF is now 47-40 in singles competition with a 22-20 mark in singles. In addition, USF is 26-19 in doubles with a 14-7 mark in doubles in league play.
"I was really pleased with the team again tonight as we had another nice all-around effort by our team," said USF Tennis Head Coach
Kevin Grebin, whose team will face Bemidji State on Saturday at 7 pm at the Huether Family Match Pointe. "We played with so much heart tonight. We had solid control of the points in this match," he said.
At No. 1,
Megan Quandt, who is 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the league, lost a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Madeleine Schneider of Minnesota Crookston in a closely-contest match.
In the other five singles matches, USF had straight set wins. Sophomore
Talia Janos recorded a win at No. 2 singles and was part of the No. 1 doubles team with
Joelle Thorfinnson which also claimed a win. Janos defeated Michelle Swyter, 6-0, 6-0 and is now 6-7 on the season with a 3-4 league mark. In doubles, Janos and Thorfinnson took a 6-3 win as they paired together for the first time.
Thorfinnson was also a double winner as she took a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sarah Velasquez at No. 3 singles. With the win, she is now 6-7 in singles with a 3-4 league mark.
At No. 4 singles, freshman
Emily Thinnsen improved to 7-6 on the season with a 4-3 NSIC mark as she defeated Tasha Schermann, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 5 singles, USF had a straight set win from freshman
Katelyn Nesheim, who improved to 10-3 on the season with a 6-1 league mark.
Freshman
Brianna Holm played at No. 6 singles and picked up straight set win of 6-1, 6-0 over Ashley Chomyn. As a result, Holm is now 3-0 on the season.
At No. 2 doubles, the freshmen tandem of Thinnsen and Nesheim improved to 5-4 on the season and 3-3 in league play with a 6-3 decision of Swyter and Samantha Gutierrez. USF also had a 6-0 win by No. 3 doubles of
Emily Applegate and
Peyton Forney. Forney and Applegate now stand 3-2 overall in doubles with a 1-0 conference mark.
