SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – By earning the doubles point and four wins in singles, the University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team (10-6, 5-3 NSIC) recorded a 5-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over Bemidji State (6-5, 3-5 NSIC) on Saturday night (April 2) at the Huether Family Match Pointe.
With its fifth win in seven matches, the Cougars moved to 5-3 in the NSIC with the victory over Bemidji State. It was USF's third straight NSIC match win and moved USF to 10-6 on the season. In 2022, USF is now 51-42 in singles competition with a 26-22 mark in singles in conference play. In addition, USF is 28-20 in doubles with a 16-8 mark in doubles in league play.
"It was another noteworthy performance," said USF Tennis Head Coach
Kevin Grebin, whose team will host Winona State on April 8 and Upper Iowa on April 9 at the Huether Family Match Pointe. "We played really smart tennis tonight with a lot of focus. I was really proud of the way they play and the effort they gave," he said.
While USF lost at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, the Cougars picked up wins at 3, 4, 5 and 6. With the doubles point, USF had the win.
At No. 1,
Megan Quandt, who is 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the league, lost a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Sophie Groen of BSU in a closely-contest match. At No. 2 singles, Shaelyn Johnson won the opening set 7-5 over
Talia Janos, who was forced to retire due to injury in the second set.
In the other four singles matches, USF had straight set wins.
At No. 3 singles, sophomore
Danielle Thorfinnson earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nicoleta Anestiadi. With the victory, Thorfinnson moved to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in the NSIC. Her sister,
Joelle Thorfinnson took a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Laney Rutkowski. She moved to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC with her second straight match win.
At No. 5 singles, freshman
Emily Thinnsen improved to 8-6 on the season with a 5-3 NSIC mark as she defeated Isabella Nelson, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 6 singles, USF had a straight set win from freshman
Katelyn Nesheim, who improved to 11-3 on the season with a 7-1 league mark. Nesheim defeated Lily Jones of BSU, 6-2, 6-0. As a result, both Thinnsen and Nesheim won their second straight singles match win.
The Thorfinnson sisters and Thinnsen/Nesheim registered doubles wins to give USF the point. At No. 2,

Joelle Thorfinnson took a 6-0 win against Nicoleta Anestiadi/Laney Rutkowski as they moved to 6-3 in doubles with a 4-1 league mark. At No. 3,
Katelyn Nesheim and
Emily Thinnsen won their third straight match with a 6-1 victory over Isabella Nelson and Lexi Leitner. It was Nesheim/Thinnsen's third straight win as they improved to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.
At No. 1 doubles,
Talia Janos and
Megan Quandt dropped a 6-3 decision to fall to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
