BRANDON, SD – With another strong start on the mound from
Caleb Ditmarson and three hits from
Noah Christenson, the University of Sioux Falls Baseball Team (16-15, 8-8 NSIC) recorded a 5-3 victory over Bemidji State (4-24, 1-13 NSIC) on Saturday night at First National Bank Field.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday at 12/2 pm also in Brandon, SD.
With a two-run home run by
Noah Christenson in the first inning, USF took a lead over BSU and held the lead for the rest of game. The Cougars added single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to hold off BSU. The Beavers scored a single run in the fourth inning and added two in the seventh inning.
Ditmarson moved to 4-2 on the season after allowing just four hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Ditmarson dropped his earned run average to 3.70 on the season with a team-high 47 strikeouts. Senior
Alex Krout closed for the Cougars and earned his NSIC-best sixth save. Krout, who now has a 2.76 earned run average, allowed a hit with a strikeout in an inning of work.
Alex Bertram worked 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief with three strikeouts.
Connor McGonigal also pitched for USF (1/3 innings, hit, run, two walks). As a unit, the staff had 11 strikeouts and walked five hitters. USF had double-digit strikeouts for the eighth time this season.
Christenson had three hits, three runs, stolen base and two RBI as he improved his average to .411, a team-high and second-best mark in the NSIC. He also has a team-best 27 RBI and a team-high .449 OBP.
Tyler Cate had a hit, run and RBI as he is now hitting .336 on the season.
Brady Klehr, who is now hitting .344 on the season, added two hits and a run.
Grant Lung and
Trey Hubers had a hit and RBI.
BSU had two RBI and a hit from Jack Munson. Logan Barrrick (1-5) took the loss after working 6 2/3 innings and allowing six hits and four runs with five strikeouts.
Stat Breakdown – With five runs and nine hits against Bemidji State, USF is now hitting .288 on the season (4th in the NSIC) with 274 hits and 192 runs. The Cougars, which moved to 7-7 at home and 8-8 in the league, has a .390 slugging and .376 OBP. On the hill, the Cougars lowered its earned run average to 6.00 and now has 215 strikeouts in 234 innings.
