Duluth, MN – The University of Sioux Falls softball team fell to UMD in both games on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1: USF 0, UMD 8

The Cougars fell to UMD by a score of 0-8 on Sunday.

The game had remained scoreless as we saw a pitcher's duel through the first 4 ½ innings of play in Game 1. It wasn't until the bottom of the 5th inning when the Bulldogs bats got hot where UMD had eight hits, bringing across eight runs and ending the game by run-rule after 5 innings. UMD ended up with seven singles and one double to bring across all the runs in the final frame.

The Cougars finished with four hits on the day. Damaris Cuevas led the Cougars with two and the other hits on the day came from Reese Holzhueter and Rylie Jones for USF.

From the circle, Hanna Cress pitched four innings and took the loss as she surrendered five hits, five earned runs, two walks, and punched out two UMD hitters on the day.

Game 2: USF 6, UMD 7

USF took a tough loss against UMD by a score of 6-7 on Sunday afternoon in Game 2 of the doubleheader.

In the 2nd inning, the Cougars hit four straight singles started by Lexie Swift and followed by Megan Lawson, Kylan Straight, and Taryn Wagner who had the RBI single to take the 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs quickly answered back in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a solo home run to tie the ball game. The game remained 1-1 until the 4th inning when UMD took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single.

In the top of the 5th inning, the Cougars got the bats rolling. Kennedy Thomas started the inning with a single, followed by singles from Megan Lawson and Kylan Straight to load the bases. Freshman Taryn Wagner came up to the plate and hit a Grand slam for USF to take a 5-2 lead over the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs would not go away as the bottom of the 7th inning came and they hit a three-run home run to tie the game at five runs each as the game headed for extra innings.

As extra innings got underway, freshman Reese Holzhueter hit a single in the top of the 8th, followed by an RBI double from senior Kylie Madrid to take a 6-5 lead going into the bottom half of the inning. The Bulldogs continued to mount a comeback throughout the game as they brought across two runs on two hits for a walk-off victory by a score of 7-6 over the Cougars.
