Box Score Fayette, IA – The University of Sioux Falls softball team fell to Upper Iowa University in Game 1 on Sunday afternoon, Game 2 was called after a long rain delay due to inclement weather and didn't count as it didn't reach the minimum number of innings played.
Game 1: USF 3, Upper Iowa 9
The Cougars fell to Upper Iowa by a score of 3-9 on Sunday in Game 1 of NSIC action.
The Peacocks got on the board early against USF with a single, double, and home run with a sacrifice and hit by pitch to make it 5-0 after the 1
st inning. UIU continued to put the pressure on as they scored two more runs in the bottom of the 2
nd inning to extend the lead to 7-0. In the 4
th inning, they brought across two more runs after a couple base hits to bring the lead to 9-0.
In the top of the 5
th inning, the Cougars got on the board when
Lexie Swift hit a two-run home run, scoring pinch runner
Danielle Klenke to make it a 2-9 ball game. In the top of the 6
th inning, freshman
Reese Holzhueter singled on ground ball to the left side, scoring senior
Kylie Madrid to bring across the third run of the game for the Cougars.
The Cougars ended with seven hits on the day, led by senior
Kylie Madrid with two base knocks and
Lexie Swift,
Reese Holzhueter,
Kennedy Thomas,
Taryn Wagner, and
Rylie Jones each had one hit apiece. From the circle,
Hanna Cress pitched the first inning surrendering four hits, two walks, and seven runs (four earned), and took the loss.
Bailee Lampman pitched the final five innings, surrendering five hits, two runs (one earned), and striking out two UIU hitters on the day.
