Cougar Football Returns Home to Host Winona State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. Cougar Football returns home this Saturday, October 21 to take on Winona State at 1pm at Bob Young Field.

 

COUGARS v. WARRIORS HISTORY

Sioux Falls and Winona State have squared off 10 times since 2012 with the Warriors ultimately holding a 6-4 series lead over the Coo.

During their last outing, USF was unable to hold on to a 17-7 lead and fell 20-17 to WSU on the road. The Cougars found more success in their passing game against the Warriors last season as Adam Mullen threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns to Ethan Wittenburg and Mark Leonard. Amaurii Grosskopf led the defense with 10 tackles on the day.

Historically, the Cougars have forced 271 points on the Warriors averaging 27.1 points a game with their largest victory of 34-12 coming in 2019.

 

THE COUGAR FILE

USF is coming off a tough 53-40 loss to MSU Moorhead despite a record breaking day for Camden Dean and Carter Slykhuis. Dean shattered a 27-year-old record set by Kurtiss Riggs in 1996 by recording 463 passing yards while setting new marks in most completions (41), most attempts (63) and total offense (583) all set by Luke Papilion. Slykhuis set a USF Division II era mark with 206 receiving yards and an overall USF mark with 18 catches.

The Cougars rushing game is led by Dylan Rudningen with 517 yards on the season and six scores followed by Dean with 453 yards and 5 touchdowns. Dean has also tossed 12 touchdowns, six just last weekend, while recording 1,461 passing yards on 190 attempts.

Carter Slykhuis and Mark Leonard continue to sit atop the receiving chart with Slykhuis totaling 671 yards on 60 receptions along with three touchdowns. Leonard has recorded 357 yards on 29 receptions thus far and four scores.

Eli Schlangen leads the defense with 38 tackles on year followed by Matt Goehring with 34.

Grosskopf has recorded five tackles for a loss of 20 yards thus far along with Brady Crawford with three tackles for a loss of six yards.

 

THE WARRIOR FILE

Winona State is coming off a 48-28 loss to #17 Augustana this past weekend and currently sit 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the NSIC.

Last season, the Warriors went 8-4 while averaging 27.00 points a game. This year, WSU has been led by quarterback Cole Stenstrom and running back Cair'ron Hendred. Over seven games, Stenstron has thrown for 1,574 yards and 13 touchdowns while completing 126 passes on 218 attempts with nine interceptions. Hendred leads the rushing game with 317 yards on the season and two scores while Kaleb Skelly sits atop the receiving charts with 348 yards and four touchdowns on 33 targets.

Clay Schueffner leads the Warrior defense with 49 tackles on the season followed by Tristan Root with 40. Kyjuan Vengrowsky and Joseph Demro each have 3.5 sacks on the season combining for seven of the teams 19 sacks.
