Coougar Football Hits the Road for Final Road Series Against SMSU

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Cougar Football hits the road for their final game of the season as they take on Southwest Minnesota State tomorrow, November 11, at 12pm at Mattke Field in Marshall, Minnesota.

 

COUGARS v. MUSTANGS HISTORY

USF currently holds 10-0 record against SMSU with an active 10 game win streak since their first faceoff in 2012. The Coo are 5-0 against the Mustangs on the road with their last road victory of 35-7 dating back to 2021.

During their last outing, Sioux Falls opened the game with a big 28-point first quarter. USF produced 412 yards of total offense with 292 yards on the ground and 120 through the air.

Historically, the Cougars have forced 406 points on the Mustangs averaging 40.6 points a game with their largest victory being 51-7 in 2019.

 

THE COUGAR FILE

USF is coming off a 28-20 loss to Wayne State and currently sit 3-7 on the season and 3-6 in the NSIC.

The Coo look to end their 2023 campaign strong entering the weekend with 4,102 yards of total offense while averaging 26.80 points a game.

Camden Dean continues to lead USF with 2,023 passing yards while going 182-for-278 with 18 touchdowns. Dean has completed 182-of-164 in 10 games while averaging 202.30 passing yards a game. On the ground, Dean has recorded 693 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 125 carriers averaging 69.30 rushing yards per game.

Dylan Rudningen leads the Cougars rushing game with 714 yards and six scores. This season, Rudningen averages 71.40 yards a game and 5.3 yards a carry while sitting at 1,145 career  rushing yards.

Carter Slykhuis and Mark Leonard sit atop the receiving chart with Slykhuis totaling 743 yards on 66 receptions along with five touchdowns this season. Leonard has recorded 435 yards on 37 receptions while tacking on four scores thus far.

Eli Schlangen, Matt Goehring and Garret Hoffman each sit with over 40 tackles on the season and combine for six pass breakups and an interception on the year. Goehring leads USF with five tackles for loss along with Amaurii Grosskopf and Brady Crawford.

 

THE MUSTANG FILE

SMSU is coming off a 32-28 loss to the University of Mary last weekend and currently sit 1-9 on the season and 1-8 in the NSIC.

Last season, the Mustangs went 4-7 while averaging 19.45 points a game. This year, SMSU averages 14.70 points a game and has been led by sophomore quarterback Marcus Martin and junior running back Donald Austin.

Martin has thrown for 1,984 yards and 10 touchdowns while completing 162-of 285 pass attempts. Austin leads the Mustangs with 781 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 181 carries while averaging 78.1 yards a game.

Peter Osman and Eric Lira lead SMSU in receiving with Osman pulling down 40 catches for 511 yards and two TDs and Lira with 36 catches for 401 yards and two scores.

Josiah Hedensten leads the team with 80 tackles on the year. He's also recorded 7.5 tackles for a loss of 33 yards and three sacks for a loss of 25. Avery Johnson paves the way with five sacks for a loss of 34 yards on the season.
