SIOUX FALLS, SD – The University of Sioux Falls softball team took on Augustana University today resulting in a series split. Augie took game one, 9-1, before USF shutout the Vikings, 2-0, in game two.
GAME ONE – L, 9-1
The Cougars dropped game one with their only run coming in the bottom of the third inning when Damaris Cuevas doubled down the right field line to score Rylie Jones.
Sioux Falls finished the game with one run off of four hits with no errors.
Lexie Swift, Kait Van Der Zwaag, Kylie Madrid and Damaris Cuevas each had one of USFs four hits in game one.
Hanna Cress started in the circle for the Cougars where she threw for 4.0 innings before Kennedy Thomas stepped in to finish game one. The two combined for four strikeouts and two walks all while facing 38 batters.
GAME TWO – W, 2-0
Kait Van Der Zwaag threw a full game shutout, her third of the season, while holding the Vikings to just one hit in game two.
Augustana's only hit came in the first inning before Sioux Falls shut them down for the remainder of the game and forcing them to leave six stranded on the base path.
Van Der Zwaag led the Coo in the circle and in the box today when she sent a two-run shot over the right field fence to give USF a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Today's shutout against the Vikings was the Cougars first shutout since their first DII meeting in 2014 when Sioux Falls defeated Augie 9-0. It also marked head coach, Shannon Pivovar's 100th career win and second career win against Augustana. Pivovar currently holds a career record of 100-103.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will be back in action this weekend as they host the University of Mary on Saturday and Minot State on Sunday. Both games are scheduled for 1pm and 3pm at the Sanford Diamonds on the campus of the Sanford Sports Complex.
