Cougar Softball Splits Against Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, IA – The Cougar softball team split their second conference series against Upper Iowa earlier today. Sioux Falls is 12-10 against the Peacocks all-time and are now 11-12 on the year and 2-2 in the NSIC.

GAME ONE – W, 7-2

USF scored first after Kylie Madrid drove in Rylie Jones on a single to center field in the bottom of the first. The Cougars tagged on another run when Lexie Swift sent a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Makenzie Weber.

Sioux Falls' bats really came to life in the bottom of the sixth when they added seven runs to go up 7-0.

Reese Holzhueter tripled to deep left center field to start the inning and was brought in by Kennedy Thomas of a single to left field. Lexie Swift had a bases clearing double to add two more runs for the Coo when Kylie Madrid and Megan Lawson added the final two of the game.

Hanna Cress pitched a complete game and picked up her first win of the season while in the circle. With a solid defense behind her, Cress only gave up four hits while facing 28 batters and striking out two.

GAME TWO – L, 5-4

Upper Iowa jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the fourth before Kait Van Der Zwaag went yard with a single homerun to left field.

The Cougars tied it up when Emma Barta stole home on a wild pitch and took the lead in the sixth when Damaris Cuevas scored Makenzie Weber to go up 3-2.

The Peacocks scored three in the top of the seventh to jump out to a 2-run lead when the Cougars came up just short in the bottom of the inning and falling 5-4.

 

The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow as they wrap up their road series at Concordia-St. Paul. First pitch is slated for 10:30am with game two to follow at 12:30pm.
