Cougar Volleyball Falls to #11 SMSU in Home Opener

Kuper surpasses 500 career kills

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Cougar Volleyball took on No.11 SMSU tonight falling in three sets.

Following tonight's matchup, SMSU has advanced to 9-1 on the season, defeating every opponent this season in three sets, while USF moves to 4-6 on the year.

The Cougars opened the match with a 3-0 lead before battling point-for-point with the Mustangs while ultimately falling 25-18 in set one. Sioux Falls landed nine kills throughout the first set but struggled to get above a .098 attacking percentage.

Sioux Falls bounced back in set two to take an eight point lead, but despite out hitting Southwest .133 to .091 the Coo were unable to hold on while falling 25-23 in set two. The Cougars landed 13 kills on 45 attacks in set two while allowing the Mustangs to just 11 on 55 attacks.

USF fell behind early in set three as SMSU went on a 7-0 run to open the set. Despite Sioux Falls continuing to chip away at the deficit, Southwest Minnesota State ultimately took set three 25-20 while taking the match in three.

Sadie Voss continues to lead the attacking game for the Coo with 10 kills on the night followed by Jordan Kuper with seven and freshman Kyleigh Tangen with five. Voss also held the teams only ace on the evening while Kupers seven kills lifted her past the 500 career kills mark.

Jordan Kuper, Jordyn Hamm and Courtney Holsteen continue to make their presence known up front combining for 13 blocks which surpassed SMSU in that category.

RECAP

The Cougars moves to 4-6 on the season and 0-2 in NSIC play as they get set to host No. 3 Wayne State this Friday, September 22 for their "EmBe/Camp Kids Day" match. The match is set to begin at 6:00pm at the Stewart Center where fans will receive a 2023 Volleyball Schedule poster which players will be available to sign following the match!
