SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The University of Sioux Falls women's basketball team saw their campaign come to an end Saturday, falling 75-61 to Northern State in the NSIC Tournament held at the Sanford Pentagon. The defeat caps off a season that saw the Cougars post a 17-14 overall record, demonstrating resilience and laying groundwork for continued development.
Kami Wadsworth delivered an outstanding 31-point performance, while Anna Vaaler dominated the boards with a team-best nine rebounds. Though mounting a valiant comeback attempt after halftime, USF couldn't erase the gap created in the opening quarters.
First Quarter
The Cougars encountered offensive difficulties early, managing just 23.1% (3-of-13) field goal efficiency without connecting from beyond the arc. Though Kami Wadsworth found early scoring opportunities, USF struggled to establish offensive flow against Northern State's defensive pressure. The Wolves capitalized on the Cougars' six first-quarter turnovers to establish a seven-point advantage heading into the second frame.
Second Quarter
USF discovered better shooting touch before halftime, hitting 43.8% (7-of-16) as Wadsworth penetrated effectively and Ayla Brown contributed timely buckets. A 6-0 scoring burst partway through the quarter kept the Cougars competitive, yet Northern State retained the upper hand with consistent interior production. The Wolves controlled the rebounding battle 11-5 during this stretch and built their advantage to 13 points at the intermission.
Third Quarter
The Cougars emerged from the locker room with renewed determination, but couldn't sustain momentum as Northern State outpaced them 19-22 despite improved 46.7% shooting efficiency. Anna Vaaler manufactured offense with three critical baskets, converting crucial opportunities to maintain USF's competitive position. Nevertheless, the Wolves maintained their effectiveness, particularly near the basket, where they ultimately secured a 46-40 edge in paint scoring.
Fourth Quarter
USF battled with determination until the closing horn, connecting at a 37.5% clip while converting all five free throw attempts. Wadsworth remained the offensive catalyst for the Cougars, and USF generated defensive stops with forced turnovers, yet Northern State withstood the Cougars' rally to win 75-61.
