HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars set the tone early when Mariah Siem finished a cross from Lily Dahler in the ninth minute to put USF on the board. A Dragons own goal in the 29th minute doubled the advantage, and Sadie Hunter added her second career goal in the 41st minute off a setup from Kate Stratman to give Sioux Falls a 3-0 halftime lead.
After the break, Stratman scored her first career goal in the 82nd minute before Hunter capped the record-setting performance with her second tally of the match in the 87th.
Head coach Joe DeMay reflected on the performance, noting the effort it took in tough conditions:
"Sunday matches are always tough and the added element of the heat made it more challenging but we showed the energy and desire to work for each other that's needed if you want to get three points on these types of days."
He also credited preparation on set pieces for sparking the Cougars' start:
"Coach Fischer predicted to the team all the work we've put into perfecting set pieces was going to pay off with a goal and Dahler and Mo connecting early in the match to get us lift off certainly set the tone and made it easier to bring the energy."
Finally, DeMay emphasized the defensive backbone that supported the offensive outburst:
"Obviously we had a great goal scoring weekend but we predicate our ability to attack on tenacious team defending to set the table to get the ball back and that certainly was a huge catalyst for the weekend. The athletes who score and create goals often get the headlines, but our backline and overall team commitment to being hard to break down against the ball was a highlight of this weekend."
