Derek Fischer, a native of Brandon, S.D., is serving as an assistant coach after a starring for the Cougars as a pitcher. While pitching for the Cougars, Fischer had a 19-17 record, including three seasons of .500 or better. He was 4-1 as a freshman, 5-3 as a sophomore, 5-8 as a junior and 5-5 as a senior.
He pitched in 52 games, making 35 starts and finished with a 4.07 ERA. Fischer had 13 complete games and five shutouts. He also appeared in relief, recording five saves. In total, he threw 230.1 innings, allowing 267 hits, 145 runs, including 104 that were earned. He had 198 strikeouts with 76 walks. As a junior, he had the 14th best ERA in thye NSIC at 3.23.Fischer, who was named an NSIC Pitcher of the Week, was third in the league in strikeouts with 79. As a senior, he was eighth in the lead in appearances with 16 and 12th in strikeouts per inning (7.15).
During his senior season Fischer was 5-5, working 68 innings and allowing 31 earned runs for a 4.10 ERA. He recorded 54 strikeouts while completing four games and tossing two shutouts. He had a 5-8 record and 3.23 ERA as a junior, appearing in 15 games with 11 starts. He had seven complete games and two shutouts. In his sophomore year, Fischer was 5-3 with a 3.57 ERA. He made 12 appearances with seven starts. He had a complete game and a shutouts. In total, he worked 45.1 innings with 33 strikeouts. In his first year, he was 4-1 with a 6.05 ERA, working in nine games with seven startrs. He had a complete game and tossed 41.2 innings with 32 strikeouts.
At a prep three-sport standout, Fischer played football, basketball and basketball. He was named first team all-region in baseball in 2010 and also garnered all-state honors. He is the son Dave and Brenda Fischer, he majored in business at USF. He has a brother, Brett and sister Krista.
