Alex Johnson enters his third season as an assistant coach at the University of Sioux Falls in 2026, where he works with the Cougar linebackers and coordinates special teams.
During the 2025 season, Johnson's linebackers played a key role in helping the Cougars finish with a 7-4 record and a 6-4 mark in NSIC play. The defense forced 13 fumbles, recovered five turnovers and limited opponents to a 41.4 percent conversion rate on third down while allowing just 26.2 points per game. Under Johnson's guidance, the special teams unit also provided a spark in the return game, averaging 20.8 yards per kickoff return and consistently giving the offense favorable field position.
Johnson joined the USF staff in 2024 and has quickly made an impact with his energy, versatility and experience coaching multiple phases of the game. He brings a well-rounded background with experience on both offense and defense, as well as success at every stop throughout his coaching career.
Prior to arriving in Sioux Falls, Johnson spent the 2023 season at Buena Vista University as the team's offensive coordinator. Before his time at BVU, he served three seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as co-defensive coordinator, helping lead the Blugolds' defensive unit while mentoring student-athletes on and off the field.
Johnson also spent two seasons on staff at Minnesota State from 2018-19, where he was part of one of the nation's premier Division II programs. During his time in Mankato, the Mavericks advanced to the NCAA Division II national semifinals in 2018 and finished as national runners-up in 2019. He helped develop four All-NSIC selections and one All-Super Region honoree during his tenure.
Johnson began his collegiate coaching career at Hamline University in 2017, laying the foundation for a coaching journey that has been defined by adaptability, player development and championship success.
A native of the Midwest, Johnson graduated from Marquette University in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in political science. His diverse coaching background, championship experience and ability to connect with student-athletes continue to make him an integral member of the University of Sioux Falls football coaching staff.
