Spencer Capitani enters his third season with the University of Sioux Falls Football Team as their Defensive Coordinator and defensive backs coach.
In the 2024 season Cougar Football finished the season 8-3 and t-2nd in conference standings. They also had 13 student-athletes named to the NSIC All-Conference teams, 15 athletes awarded All-Academic team and 20 athletes awarded All-Academic team of Excellence.
Capitani joins USF following a five year stint at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. He helped produce an all-region athlete, one All-American, and 10 all-conference players. Capitani helped lead the Wildcats to three conference championships, an NCAA playoff appearance in 2021, and national recognition in 2022.
Prior to Central Washington, Capitani spent two years at Minnesota State – Mankato as a cornerbacks coach. While with the Mavericks, he helped produce two all-conference athletes while helping lead the #1 team in the nation to an NSIC conference championship in 2017. Capitani helped lead MSU to a 21-4 overall record during his time with the Mavs while also helping lead the ninth ranked defense in the nation.
Capitani started his coaching career at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse as a cornerback's coach where he also coordinated special teams and offensive scout teams.
Prior to his coaching career, Capitani was an All-American cornerback at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa where he earned Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors and multiple all-region and all-conference awards. Capitani was named a team captain his senior season while helping lead his 12-1 team to back-to-back conference championships.
He graduated from Wartburg College with a bachelor's degree in business administration followed by his masters in sports administration and coaching from the University of Concordia Irvine.
