Biography

CAREER: Played in 15 games…completed 74 for 119 passes for 803 yards and three TDs…recorded three touchdowns…rushed 58 times for 175 yards and a TD...named 2014 NSIC All Academic...during spring of 2015, moved from quarterback to safety… totaled 47 tackles.

2016: Sat out season due to injury. Returns for 2017 with medical redshirt.

2015: after switching from quarterback to safety... totaled 47 tackles… 28 solo and 19 assisted… recovered one fumble vs. Henderson State in the 2015 NCAA Division II Opening Round… had a high of seven tackles vs. Southwest Minnesota on Oct. 17… also had a game of six tackles vs. Mary on Sep. 5… had eight games of four or more tackles… earned NSIC All-Academic Team

2014: Played in eight games…recorded 23 carries for 70 yards…with high of nine carries for 31 yards vs. Minot State…completed 41 for 57 passes for 386 yards with one TD and no interceptions…had 134.60 passing efficiency…completed 18-of-22 passes for 163 yards and TD vs. Minot State (9/5/14)...transitioned from offense to defense as a safety in spring 2015.

2013: Played in seven of 11 games...completed 53.2 percent of his passes (33-for-62) for 417 yards with two TDs and two interceptions... also rushed 35 times for 105 yards and one TD...averaged 3.0 yards per rush and recorded a 113.92 pass efficiency…Rushed four times for 35 yards in the win over the NSU… worked in relief in the win against Minnesota Crookston, completing 6-of-9 passes for 58 yards…also scored his first-career TD on a five-yard run…got in for just three plays in the loss at Upper Iowa but made that a productive outing, as he went 2-for-2 and connected with Wes Smith on a 78-yard pass before notching his first career passing TD with a 3-yard strike to Erik Albeck…saw significant time under center during the Cougars’ home finale against No. 1 Minnesota State, where he completed 18-of-38 passes for 225 yards with one TD and one interception…he also picked up 37 yards on 17 attempts including a career-long 17-yard scamper against the Mavericks.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Desert Vista...three-year letter winner for Thunder football and track and field...guided Desert Vista to 2011 state crown and the 2012 state quarterfinals...the two-way standout earned all-state HM nods as a DB in 2011 and recognition at QB in 2012...team captain...recipient of Desert Vista Character Player of the Year and school's Outstanding Sprinter award...racked up 1,575 passing yards (14 TD), 360 rushing yards (1 TD) and 45 receiving yards during career...averaged 36 yards per punt return and 23 per kick  return...maintained a 3.7 GPA...FCA Vice President (2011-13).

PERSONAL: Son of Dave and Georgina Young...born July 27, 1994...grandson of former USF head football coach, all-time victories leader and NAIA Hall of Famer Bob Young...has one sister, Andrea...majoring in psychology, criminal justice and social science...will graduate with bachelor of arts in May, 2017 and enroll in master of education program at USF...cousin A.J. Garrow is wide receiver on USF...involved in Act of Kindness program...in 8th grade Matt was the QB for the West All-Stars in the Under Armour Youth All-Star game in Orlando, Fla.
