Shawn Bergan enters his 12th season as an assistant coach with the University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball program in 2026-27. A USF alumnus and longtime fixture in South Dakota basketball, Bergan has been instrumental in helping build one of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's most consistent and successful programs.
During his tenure on the Cougar staff, Bergan has helped guide USF to a 168-89 overall record and 10 winning seasons. He has played a key role in the program's rise as a perennial postseason contender, helping lead the Cougars to two NCAA Division II Central Region appearances, 11 NSIC Tournament berths, six 20-win seasons, and a pair of conference championships. Bergan was part of the staff that guided Sioux Falls to its first NSIC Tournament Championship in 2016 and helped lead the Cougars to their first NSIC South Division title in 2019-20. That season, USF reached a top-10 national ranking and earned the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Division II Central Regional.
Bergan completed his 11th season with the Cougars in 2025-26, helping guide USF to a 13-16 overall record and a 10-12 mark in NSIC play. He played an integral role in the development of several of the conference's top players, including First Team All-NSIC selection Anna Vaaler and NSIC Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Conference honoree Krista Langager. The Cougars also continued their tradition of academic excellence, producing nine NSIC Team of Excellence selections, four CSC Academic All-District honorees, and a CorTrust Scholar-Athlete in Kami Wadsworth.
Throughout his time at USF, Bergan has helped mentor numerous standout student-athletes, including NSIC Player of the Year Taylor Varsho, NCAA Division II All-American Sam Knecht, D2CCA All-Region selection Kaely Hummel, and three consecutive NSIC Freshman of the Year recipients in Kamryn Wadsworth (2023-24), Alexis Rose (2024-25), and Krista Langager (2025-26).
Before joining the USF staff, Bergan spent five seasons as a part-time assistant coach at Augustana University from 2008-13 after serving seven seasons as the head girls basketball coach at Sioux Falls Lincoln High School. In more than three decades of coaching, he has gained experience at both the high school and collegiate levels while working with men's and women's basketball programs throughout the state.
Bergan earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Sioux Falls and a Master of Science in Athletic Administration from South Dakota State University. He also earned his teaching certificate from Augustana and previously served as a part-time assistant coach for the Augustana men's basketball program from 1991-94.
A native of Webster, South Dakota, Bergan and his wife, Ginger, a physical education teacher in the Sioux Falls School District, reside in Sioux Falls with their children, Bo, Gracie, and Anna.
