Five University of Sioux Falls men's basketball players scored double-digit points in tonight's 88-84 win at Morningside College (8-13 overall, 4-5 Great Plains Athletics) in Sioux City, Iowa. No. 19 USF improves to 14-5 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
For the second straight game senior guard
Eric Tisby (Fort Worth, Texas) led USF in scoring, tallying 21 points that included four of eight shooting from beyond the three point line. Senior guard
Ronnell Grant (Tucson, Ariz.) added 19 points with seven rebounds while sophomore
David Maxwell (Parkston, S.D.) led the Cougars with eight rebounds and 12 points. The forward hit a crucial three point attempt late in the game.
Morningside looked extremely strong in the first three minutes of the game, running to a 10-0 lead off the tip. USF continued to struggle the next couple of minutes before making a 11-2 run over the matter of three minutes that brought the Cougars to within three points, down 22-19.
USF could not take the lead in the first half, but pulled within a point when Tisby made a three pointer with five minutes remaining. The Mustangs scored the final points of the half to take a 45-41 lead to the locker room. Tisby and Grant led USF with 14 points at the break.
MC built their lead to as much as seven points in the opening moments of the second half, but USF began to chip away at the lead minutes later. Sophomore
James Rader (Littleton, Colo.) converted on two free throws with 13:14 left in the game to give USF their first lead of the game. Rader had seven points and three rebounds in 15 minutes of play tonight.
USF held as much as an eight point lead over the next 10 minutes, but the Mustangs found their way back into the game, holding a four point lead with 2:14 showing on the clock. Maxwell then knocked down a three point attempt and the Cougars made six straight free point attempts to take command of the game that ended with USF's 10th win in the last 11 games.
Senior
Matt Malloy (Parkston, S.D.) scored 14 points tonight to move past Herb Buckner and Chris Frick for the No. 5 spot on the USF career scoring charts.
USF will hit the hardwood again tomorrow, playing Johnson and Wales (Colo.) at 4:00 p.m. in the Stewart Center.
