Cougars Fall to No. 1 Mavericks, 2-0

The University of Sioux Falls women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to No. 1 Minnesota State University Sunday afternoon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

It was the Mavericks 12th consecutive win, as they improved to a perfect 13-0-0 in NSIC play, while the game marked the Cougars 12th conference loss of the year. USF is now 0-12-1 in conference competition.

MSU got their offense clicking early. The Mavericks recorded the first goal less than 90 seconds into the game. Brianne West found teammate Tori Meinhardt in the box for a quick strike into left net.

USF seemed to wake up after MSU initial goal, and they played strong defense the rest of the way. They held MSU's high-powered offense scoreless over the next 52 minutes.

The Mavericks maintained a 1-0 lead at the break.

Down just one, the game was still up for grabs in the second half, but the Cougars struggled to find any offense, as they constantly found themselves protecting their net.

MSU's possession domination in the second half resulted in an insurance goal in the 53rd minutes. The Mavericks converted one of their nine cornerkicks opportunities of the second half when Haley Peterson connected with Emily Morris, who headed a perfect pass to the foot of Nicole Dooher to go ahead 2-0.

The Mavericks setup for a total of 11 cornerkicks and placed nine shots on goal. They finished with 28 shots on the day.

USF received solid time in net from both Samantha Maybon, who made the start and Corrin Cook who provided relief in the second half. Maybon turned away four shots, while Cook was credited with five saves.

The Cougars host Wayne State Friday night, October 26 in their final home game of the year.
