Cougars Felled by Vikings, 5-1

Augustana College put up four runs in the seventh inning to top the University of Sioux Falls, 5-1, at Ronken Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cougars fall to 3-12 overall while the Vikings improve to 3-3.

Augustana now holds a 14-8 all-time edge against Sioux Falls.

The Vikings out-hit the visiting Cougars 8-3 and both teams committed three errors in the field.
Brady Nolz (0-3) took the loss for USF. The senior righty worked 6.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Noah Coleman tossed 1.2 innings of relief and gave up one run on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.

Casey Jacobson notched his first win of the season, giving up one run on just two hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

USF went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Anthony Williams led off the frame with his team-leading 16th single. With one out and Austin Goodenow on first base, Jimmy Maxwell laced a RBI single to left-center giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Maxwell had missed the previous four games with a broken bone in his hand.

Augustana tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Viking Tony Viger reached second base after an error by the third baseman and scored when Derek Hansen lifted a RBI single to left field on an 0-2 count.

Cougar starter Brady Nolz escaped a bases loaded jam in the fifth. Following an error, fielder's choice and hit by pitch, Viger grounded out to Zach Ireland on a fastball down in the zone for a 6-4-3 double play.

Both teams went quietly in the sixth. After the Cougars went three up, three down in the top of the seventh, Viking Brian Knight drew a one out walk and advanced to second on an error at first base. A hit by pitch and base knock put ducks on the pond and USF head coach Matt Guiliano went to the bullpen for Noah Coleman. The sophomore southpaw had Hansen in an 0-2 count but the junior ripped a triple to center to clear the bases. Hansen was plated on a keystone hit by Nate Hewes to increase the Vikings' lead to 5-1.

USF attempted a rally in the top of the ninth. Brennden Ward drew a two-out walk and was moved into scoring position on a single by Zach Ireland, but the game ended as Damian Kardas grounded out to second base.

The Cougars tallied just three hits in the game. Maxwell finished 1-for-4 with an RBI double. Williams and Zach Ireland each posted a single. Ireland is now 5-for-9 (.555) in three games against the Vikings.

Sioux Falls heads to California this weekend for its annual spring break trip. The Cougars will play five games in five days, starting with the 2011 NAIA champion Concordia University-Irvine Eagles on March 18.
