Baseball Suffers 20-7 Loss to CSU-Dominguez Hills

The University of Sioux Falls baseball team dropped the final game of its spring break trip on Thursday, falling to Cal State-Dominguez Hills, 20-7.

USF moves to 3-17 on the year. CSDH improves to 8-17.

CSDH took a 5-0 lead in the first inning before tallying 15 runs in the final four frames.

Jimmy Maxwell led the Cougars at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Keith Cutler drove in two runs while Dylan Dwyer picked up an RBI, walked and scored a run.

The Cougars posted eight hits in the contest and scored three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, one in the eighth and two runs in the ninth inning.

Senior Brady Nolz (0-4) took the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in five innings. He issued one walk and posted four strikeouts.

Andrew Christensen (5 R/ 4 H/ 1 BB), Austin Burke (6 R/2 H/3 BB/ 1 SO) and Derek Fischer (1 R/3 H/ 3 SO) each tossed one inning of relief.

The Toros touched Nolz for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning to go ahead early 5-0. CSDH tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

USF broke into the scoring column with three runs in the top of the sixth. Kardas hit a one-out double and later scored on a balk. Dwyer and Noah Coleman each drew a two-out walk and were plated by Keither Cutler's base knock to right center field.

The Toros responded with five runs in their half of the inning and put it on cruise control the rest of the way.

The CSDH nine enjoyed their most successful inning in the seventh, plating six runs on two hits.

The Toros capped the game by scoring one run on a trio of hits in the eighth inning.

The Cougars pushed a run across in the seventh when Austin Goodenow drew a one-out walk and later scored on Maxwell's single to left field. Coleman walked to lead off the eighth and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Derek Fischer followed but dug himself a hole by swinging at some bad pitches outside the strike zone. He dug into the batter's box facing an 0-2 count and drove the ball to left field to score Coleman.

USF added two runs in the ninth to create the final margin. Kardas was issued a one-out walk and touched home when Maxwell ripped the next pitch to right field for a triple. A sacrifice by Dwyer scored Maxwell before Fischer struck out swinging to end the game.

The Cougars return to Sioux Falls after a 20-game road trip to play its home-opener this weekend against MSU-Mankato.
