Cougars Post Saturday Sweep of William Jewell

Baseball USF Athletics

Cougars' Home Opener Spoiled by MSU-Mankato

MSU-Mankato pitching limited the USF baseball team to three runs in two games and helped the visiting Mavericks secure a sweep Friday afternoon and spoil the Cougars' home opener.

The Mavericks captured the two victories by scores of 6-2 and 7-1.

Mankato moved to 15-3 overall while Sioux Falls dropped to 3-19.

In the opener, the Cougars took an early 2-0 lead after consecutive two-out singles by Damian Kardas and Jimmy Maxwell. Kardas scored thanks to a Maverick fielding error and Maxwell touched home when Zach Ireland knocked the first pitch he faced to right field for a single to put the home team up 2-0 after one inning.

The Mavericks responded with four runs in the next frame on Ben Kincaid's three-run homer and an RBI base knock by Matt Kuchenbecker.

Mankato pushed across two more runs in the third when the lead-off hitter reached on an error by the USF shortstop and eventually crossed the plate on a keystone hit to center field by Matt Odegaard, who would later score on a passed ball.

The Cougars were unable to put a man in scoring position the rest of the game.

Eric Brothers (1-3) was charged with the loss for USF. The freshman gave up six runs (four earned) on 10 hits during his complete game performance, striking out four and walking two.

Offensively, Noah Coleman was 2-for-3 and Ireland finished 1-for-2 with an RBI. Four different Cougars recorded one single each.

In the nine-inning nightcap, USF once again struck first when Anthony Williams led-off with a single and scored on a single by Austin Goodenow.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fourth, when Kuchenbecker opened the frame with a single, took second on a balk and scored on Kincaid's hard liner up the middle.

The Maverick nine produced the decisive inning during their fifth-inning at-bat. The Mavericks sent seven hitters to the plate, scoring three of them. A one-out double by Mike Eckhart and a single by Todd Standish put runners on the corners for Lucas Skjefte whose bunt single put Mankato in front 2-1. Standish moved to third on Skjefte's single and a fly-out and would later steal home to cap off the Mavericks' two run, three hit inning.

Mankato added three runs in the eighth inning and a seventh run scored in the ninth after a Maverick reached on a lead-off double and scored on another two-bagger.

Cougar starter Brady Nolz (0-5) suffered the pitching loss, allowing six runs on 12 this with four strikeouts in 7.2 innings. Southpaw Andrew Christensen provided 1.1 innings of relief. The redshirt junior allowed one run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Williams recorded two of USF's five hits. Goodenow had an RBI single while Keith Cutler and Ryan Fobes each had a single.

The Cougars will conclude the four-game series with the Mavericks tomorrow at Harmodon Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
