ST. GEORGE, Kan. – The University of Sioux Falls baseball team erupted for 13 runs and 15 hits Friday afternoon, but Concordia-St. Paul answered with a late comeback to hand the Cougars a 16-13 loss in a wild NSIC contest at Rock Creek High School. Sioux Falls built an eight-run sixth inning and carried a 13-5 lead into the bottom half, but the Golden Bears chipped away over the final four innings and walked it off with a four-run home run in the ninth.
The game featured no shortage of offense on either side, as the two teams combined for 29 runs and 33 hits. Mitch Iliff homered twice and finished with three hits and two RBI, while Drew Miller added a homer and three RBI of his own. Dominic Vogel and Jackson Yeager also homered during Sioux Falls' huge sixth inning, but Concordia-St. Paul's relentless lineup answered with 11 runs over the final four frames to erase the deficit. The loss dropped USF to 13-15 overall and 9-6 in NSIC play.
Final Score
- Concordia-St. Paul 16, Sioux Falls 13
How It Happened
Sioux Falls struck first in the opening inning. William Edwards singled and advanced on Mitch Iliff's walk before Brady Schafer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Drew Miller then grounded into a fielder's choice that brought home Edwards for a 1-0 lead.
Concordia-St. Paul answered immediately on a solo homer in the bottom of the first, then jumped in front for the first time in the third. After Sioux Falls had built a 4-1 lead thanks to Schafer's sacrifice fly and Miller's two-run homer in the top half of the inning, the Golden Bears responded with a four-run frame that included a three-run home run and an RBI double to make it 5-4.
Iliff tied the game with a solo shot in the fifth, but the decisive offensive burst came one inning later. Sioux Falls sent wave after wave to the plate in the sixth, beginning with a two-run homer from Vogel. Yeager followed with a solo blast, then Iliff and Schafer went back-to-back as the Cougars piled up eight runs in the inning. Johnson added a run-scoring double, Casey Sehr drove in a run with a single, and Nolan Drossel capped the rally with an RBI single to put USF in front 13-5.
Concordia-St. Paul refused to go away. A solo homer and a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth trimmed the lead to 13-8. The Golden Bears added another run in the seventh, then plated three more in the eighth on a sacrifice fly and a two-run single to cut the deficit to 13-12.
That set the stage for the ninth. After a leadoff walk and a single put immediate pressure on the Cougars, Sioux Falls intentionally walked a hitter to load the bases with one out. Concordia-St. Paul then delivered the final blow, launching a walk-off grand slam to right to complete the comeback.

Coach's Corner
"Tough loss today. With the way the wind was blowing out today I had a feeling it was going to be a high scoring game. We got away from our approaches after the 8-spot in the 6th & their last relief pitcher, Smith did a good job of hanging 3 straight zeros. That allowed them to hang around & chip away at our lead & put them within striking distance in the last inning. Our pitchers weren't very good today. We fell behind all day & they did a good job of making us pay. We'll need to bounce back tomorrow in a big way if want to win this series."
