Cougars Earn Saturday Split with Golden Bears

The University of Sioux Falls baseball team split the first two of a four-game road series with the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears on Saturday at Barnes Park.

The Golden Bears (18-12) took the opener, 11-8 and the Cougars (8-24) bounced back for a 4-0 win in the nightcap.

Damian Kardas was 4-for-7 on the day with a homer, two runs and three RBI. Jimmy Maxwell also went 4-for-7 at the plate with a homer and finished with two runs scored, two RBI and a walk.

Defense haunted the Cougars in the game one, as five errors led to five runs for the Bears.

The Golden Bears jumped on the visitors early with a five-run second inning. After an error by the USF third baseman put the leadoff hitter on base, a pair of singles and a fielder's choice gave the Bears a 2-0 lead. Another Cougar infield miscue put two men on for Paul Giel, who cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left field.

USF scratched a run across in the third when Damian Kardas hit a lead-off double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Williams. A solo home run by Jimmy Maxwell and an infield RBI single by backstop Dylan Dwyer in the top of the fourth trimmed the Bears' lead to 5-3. CU answered with two runs in its half of the inning, scoring runs on a Cougar outfield error and an RBI two-bagger to go ahead 7-3.

The Cougars rallied for five runs in the sixth to take their first lead of the game at 8-7. With two men on and one out, Damian Kardas crushed his first home run of the season to cut the Bears' lead to 7-6. Williams followed with a single and Austin Goodenow reached base on an error by the Bears' shortstop. An intentional walk to Maxwell jacked the bases for Keith Cutler, who knocked a two-run double.

The lead wouldn't stand up, however, as the Bears pushed across four runs in the bottom of the sixth to chase Cougar southpaw Noah Coleman and steal the 11-8 win.

Coleman (0-5) was credited with the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs (three earned) on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Chris Nichols tossed one inning of relief and gave up two runs, two hits and issued one walk.

Kardas was 3-for-4 in the game with a three run homer. Maxwell had two hits, one RBI and scored a run. Cutler was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

In game two, the Cougars' top of the order delivered in a big way, recording seven hits and three RBI in USF's 4-0 shut-out victory.

Williams got things rolling in the top of the first with a lead-off home run, his first of the season, to put the Cougars in front 1-0.

Maxwell, batting in the three hole, led off the fourth with a base hit and came around to score after a single by Kardas and a sacrifice by Noah Coleman.

The Cougars padded their lead in the seventh with two runs on a quartet of base knocks to the outfield.

Cougar RHP Derek Fischer (5-1) pitched into some trouble early, putting two men on in both the second and third frames with three walks and a hit by pitch, but settled down to record a five-hit gem, fanning four.

Williams led the Cougars at the plate with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Austin Goodenow and Maxwell each posted two hits and a run batted in.

The Cougars will wrap up the four game series with the Golden Bears tomorrow with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for noon.
