Cougars Produce Hits, Not Enough Runs at BCU

Despite outhitting the Chargers 9-7, the University of Sioux Falls baseball team fell to Briar Cliff, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Bishop-Mueller Field in Sioux City.

USF dropped to 4-21 while Briar Cliff improved to .500 (16-16) overall.

Briar Cliff's second inning would prove to be the difference as the Chargers were able to take advantage of a one-out, bases-loaded situation to chase Cougar starter Brady Nolz (0-6) with three runs in the frame.

The Cougars got on the board in the first inning when Austin Goodenow followed up his game-winning home run performance on Saturday with a lead-off double and touched home after a sacrifice and an error by the Charger first baseman.

Briar Cliff failed to score in its half of the frame but looked to take control in the second inning, scoring three runs after a pair of singles, a sacrifice and a base on balls loaded the bases for Shane Richins, who drove in two runs on a fielder's choice. The Chargers added a run on a balk charged to Nolz to go ahead 3-1 after two innings.

The Charger nine increased their lead with one run in the bottom of the third on a lead-off error and a base knock to right field.

The game was quiet until the top of the sixth, when USF tallied three straight two-out singles to cut its deficit to two runs.

Briar Cliff added to its total in its half of the inning after an RBI sacrifice bunt following two batters reaching base after a single and an error on the USF third baseman to put the score at 5-2.

Although USF led off the ninth with back-to-back singles to left field, Briar Cliff got out of the inning with the help of a double play and a groundout to end the game.

Keith Cutler led the Cougars at the plate with two hits and one RBI. Goodenow and Noah Coleman also posted two hits each while Anthony Williams was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Nolz threw two innings and took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk. Eric Brothers tossed 4.0 innings of relief, giving up two runs on a pair of hits with one walk and a strikeout. Andrew Christensen provided two innings of scoreless relief.

The Cougars will host Minot State (5-19) this weekend in a four-game series. First pitch at Harmodon Park is scheduled for Friday at 1:00 p.m.
