USF Soccer Claims First NSIC Win

The USF women's soccer team claimed their first victory since joining the NSIC when they defeated Minnesota Crookston by a score of 1-0 on Saturday. The victory was the first win for the Cougars since November 6, 2011.

“From game to game we've worked on the little things and just putting the pieces together,” said head coach Mekonnen Afa. “Today's win was a buildup from the little things we've been doing throughout the season.”

Late in the first period, the Cougars Ciara Howerton found the back of the net off of a Rachel Mata pass to put the Cougars up 1-0 heading into the half. USF's defense wreaked havoc on the UMC offense in the first period as the Golden Eagles were held to one shot in the first 45 minutes of action.

The Cougars strong defensive performance continued into the final period as they held Minnesota Crookston to four shots.

The Golden Eagles had chances late to tie the game as they recorded five corner kicks and a shot in the final ten minutes of the match. However, the Cougar's defense proved to be too much as they held onto the 1-0 lead.

Senior goalkeeper Corrin Cook locked down the net as she recorded two saves in the shutout win.

With the win, USF improves to 1-7-1 (1-4-1 NSIC) on the season while UMC falls to 2-6-1 (0-5-1 NSIC).

“Both teams fought hard to get their first NSIC win and it was a battle,” said Afa. “We were fortunate to be the team that came out ahead.”

The Cougars will compete next against Bemidji State on Sunday, October 6 with the match beginning at 1 p.m.
