The Cougars wrapped up play at the
NSIC/MIAA Crossover tournament with games against MIAA schools Truman State and
Washburn University. USF was defeated 8-0 by both the Bulldogs and the Lady
Blues in abbreviated five inning contests.
The Cougars fell to 0-4 on the
season, while Truman State improved to 7-2 overall.
In the first game, freshman Kindra
Henze and senior Kirsten Krause combined for Truman State's eighth no-hitter
since 1999. Henze struck out 10 of the 12 Cougars she faced, including the
first five to start the game, while Krause added notched another strikeout in
the fifth and final frame.
The game was uneventful until Truman State's Andrea Klipsch led off the top of
the third with a double. USF starting pitcher Amanda Walters retired the next
two Bulldogs before Kelsey Bollman's base hit to right field plated Klipsch.
The Cougars were a strike away from getting out of the inning but TSU's Kristin
Grossman belted a two-run homer on a 3-2 count to put the Bulldogs in front
3-0.
The Bulldogs tacked on four runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to put the
mercy rule into effect.
USF got behind early in the second
game versus Washburn, going down 5-0 after the first inning. The Cougars put
runners on first and second with one out in their half of the frame, but the
Lady Flames got out of the jam by inducing an infield fly and a fielder's
choice.
The score remained the same until
the bottom of the fifth, when Washburn's Shelby Erickson belted a three-run
homer to end the game.
Brooke Stetzler, Erin Scott and Shelby Thompson accounted for the Cougars'
three hits. Stetzler also stole a base.
The Cougars will travel to Joplin, Mo., next weekend to compete in the Missouri
Southern tournament.
