USF Drops 1-0 Thriller at Nebraska-Kearney

The USF soccer team opened up the 2013 season with a close loss on the road to non-conference foe Nebraska-Kearney. The Cougars forced the match into overtime, but gave up a goal to the Lopers Samantha Rieber just one minute into the extra period.

The Lopers had several chances to score early, but a strong half of play by USF's Corrin Cook kept Nebraska-Kearney from converting those opportunities into goals. Cook recorded three saves for the Cougars during the first period sending the Cougars into halftime with a 0-0 tie.

Newcomer Ciara Howerton would get up the Cougars lone shot attempt of the day during the 65th minute of the match when her shot came up wide right of the goal.

The Cougars stingy defense only gave up two shot attempts in the second period. However, late in the second period, the Cougars nearly gave away the game when the Lopers Missy Everson attempted a shot in the 86th minute. Cook once again came to the Cougars rescue, earning her fourth save of the day.

In the 96th minute, Nebraska-Kearney's Meaghan Pasbrig lofted a corner kick which was netted by teammate Samantha Rieber to claim the victory for the Lopers.

USF will travel to Fort Hays, Kan. on Sunday, September 8 to take on Fort Hays State. The start is set for 11 a.m.
