SIOUX FALLS -- The honors keep rolling in for Solomon St. Pierre of the #16 University of Sioux Falls Football Team (11-1), who had a remarkable season in 2014. Today, St. Pierre has earned selection to a third All-American team after being named to the first team on the Associated Press Little All American squad, which includes NCAA DII, DIII and NAIA honorees.
Aside the AP Little All-American team, St. Pierre, a junior cornerback, was named to the 2014 Daktronics Division II All-American First Team, and to the AFCA Coaches All-American First Team. With his selection, the Cougars now have 41 first-team All-Americans with kicker Brian Hansen the first in 1982. USF has had a combined 67 first or second team All-Americans plus another 28 named honorable mention.
St. Pierre, a criminal justice major, has also been named to the All-NSIC first team, Daktronics Super Region 3 first team, and BeyondSportsNetwork.com Super Region 3 first team. The junior cornerback collected a school-record tying 10 interceptions, which was the most in NCAA DII. He recorded the most interception return yards in DII and tied for most interception TD returns with two. He is second nationally in interceptions per game at 0.8 (10 in 12 games) and ranks first in the NSIC and second nationally in passes defended with 23 or 1.9 per game.
He was a major contributor on a defense that ranks third nationally in turnovers caused with 40 and fourth in turnover margin at 1.67 (40-to-20). USF is second nationally with 26 interceptions and tied for first with seven defensive TDs (four interception returns) while ranking second in return yardage with 485.
St. Pierre, who had nine tackles in the win over Central Oklahoma of the MIAA in the Mineral Water Bowl on Dec. 6, has tied a school record for interceptions in a season with 10 (Phil Porter, 1995). He also has 63 tackles, including 44 solo stops, with two forced fumbles and fumble recovery. St. Pierre tied for Cougars Chuck Morrell (1995-97) and Nick Casiello (1988, 1990-91) for 10th on the career interceptions at USF with 13.
St. Pierre, who has 76-yard and 35-yard interception returns, set a school record with 308 interception return yards and bettered the mark of Trevor Holleman who 282 return yards (16 interceptions) from 2006-09. St. Pierre finished just one interception away from tying the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record of 11 by Jack Moro of St. Cloud State (2011). He has 35 interceptions including his time as a high school and college football player. He set a South Dakota record with 22 picks at Wagner High School.
