Cougars Fall to No. 38 Augustana

The Sioux Falls women's tennis team (0-1, 0-1 NSIC) opened the 2013-14 season with a hard-fought 9-0 loss to crosstown rival Augustana College at Sioux Empire Fitness.

“We just played a very strong and deep Augustana team,” said head coach Kevin Grebin  “We had some good points during the matches, but could not get an advantage in the games.”

With the win, No. 38 Augustana extended its conference match-winning streak to 44 consecutive wins and earned a point in the First Dakota National Bank Mayor's Cup race.

Beginning with doubles matches, the Vikings built a 3-0 lead in the team score, led by the No. 2 ranked doubles pairing in the Central Region, Katie Jesperson and Jessa Richards. Augustana's No. 1 doubles duo defeated USF sophomores Joey Bosch and Amanda Beard, 8-0.

All six Vikings won their singles matches in straight sets and no Cougar singles player won more than three games in a set.

Redshirt senior Molly Seigenthaler won the most individual games as she fell 6-1, 6-3 to Christine Olivo at No. 4 singles.

USF will close out the weekend against Upper Iowa on Sunday morning with first serve scheduled for 9 a.m. at Sioux Empire Fitness.
