The University of Sioux Falls baseball team (4-5) dropped their first two spring break contests on Sunday afternoon at No. 16 California State University-San Marcos (14-8) by scores of 16-4 and 9-0.

Allowing a combined 13 runs in the fourth and fifth inning of the opener left too large of a dent for USF to fix in its 16-4 game one defeat.

Gunner Peterson's RBI single gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the third before CSUSM notched back-to-back RBI base hits with one out in the third to move in front 2-1.

CSUSM broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning that chased Cougar starter Eric Brothers.

Pitching woes continued for the Cougars in the bottom of the fifth, however, when the first five CSUSM batters reached base before an out was recorded. The California Cougars scored seven runs in the frame by way of five hits and three walks.  

Sioux Falls recorded a season-high 12 hits and was paced at the plate by Peterson (2-for-2, two RBI), Jordan Jeske (2-for-3, one RBI and one run scored) and sophomore outfielder Trevor Crow (1-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and two walks).

Brothers (0-2) took the loss on the mound. The California native pitched 3.2 innings, allowed nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) while walking two and striking out one. Austin Goodenow gave up seven runs on four hits with three walks, while sophomore Dylan Rock tossed a solid 3.1 innings of relief, where he allowed one run on five hits, fanning two and walking one batter.

USF was shut out for the first time this season in game two as the Purple & White fell 9-0 to the CSUSM Cougars.

Cal State-San Marcos racked up 10 hits and used a seven-run third inning to secure the victory. CSUSM's Kyle Montiel (3-0) threw a complete game one-hitter to silence the visiting Cougars. The junior southpaw racked up six strikeouts and issued a pair of walks in seven innings.  

USF's lone hit came from freshman infielder Anthony Lopez, who registered a two-out single in the fifth frame for his fourth collegiate base knock.

USF senior righthander Derek Fischer (1-1) was saddled with the loss after he was touched for nine runs (four earned) off of nine hits. Fischer walked two and fanned two batters.

The Cougars will wrap up the four-game series tomorrow against Cal State-San Marcos with another twinbill slated to begin at noon (PT).
