ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Stretching their winning streak to four matches, University of Sioux Falls Volleyball swept St. Cloud State, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-19), on Saturday evening. The Cougars push their record to 16-8 on the season with a 10-6 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition.
Sioux Falls featured a balanced offensive attack that finished with four different hitters recording six or more kills and
Sydney Schaap leading them to a .287 team attack percentage. Leading the way for the second consecutive night was sophomore middle blocker
Lexi Scott, who posted 11 kills in just 16 attempts to finish with a .500 attack percentage.
Makenna Rockeman added 10 kills while
Bria Barfnecht and
Jordan Calef contributed seven and six, respectively.
The USF defense was equally impressive on the night, limiting SCSU to a .158 attack percentage and forcing the Huskies into 21 attack errors. The Cougars combined for eight total blocks with Calef notching a team-high six block assists.
Abby Folk, who picked up seven digs in just the second set, finished with a team-high 10 out of USF's 34 total digs.
After losing the first point of the opening set, Sioux Falls reeled off five straight points and never trailed despite St. Cloud State slowly chipping away at Cougar lead. Calef and Rockeman sparked the 5-0 run with consecutive kills then combined for a block to cap off the burst. Calef added two more kills as the teams traded points before
Kelli Holloway knocked down back-to-back aces to push the USF lead to six points.
St. Cloud State drew within one point on three occasions before the Cougars strung together a 5-1 run led by two Scott kills and a Scott-Schaap block. The Huskies made one final push and cut their deficit to one point again at 23-22, but Rockeman and Barfnecht provided the final two points with a kill each for the 25-23 win.
While USF's offense led the way in the opening set – the Cougars posted a .407 attack percentage in the first frame – the defense was the deciding factor in set two. USF dug 15 and blocked three of SCSU's attacks in the second set, led by Folk's seven pickups.
The Cougars again built an early lead, jumping out to a 9-5 advantage with Caled posting two kills and adding a block with Barfnecht. The USF lead expanded to six after Barfnecht and Scott terminated attempts then Rockeman and Calef combined again for a block. USF's lead reached its pinnacle at 20-13 as a result of a Barfnecht kill and the Cougars coasted into the intermission with a 25-20 victory.
For the third straight set, St. Cloud State started with a 1-0 lead, but those were the only leads the Huskies would hold in the match. Scott started a 7-1 run with a kill and Calef continued her dominance up front with two more block assists, teaming up with Rockeman and Barfnecht for stuffs on consecutive points. Rockeman connected on three straight kills to keep the Cougars rolling and USF pulled ahead by seven after Calef posted her third block of the set. St. Cloud State made a late push with 3- and 4-0 runs, but Scott thwarted any comeback bid with two more kills and Holloway capped the match with her fourth ace of the night, securing the 25-19 third-set win.
The Cougars continue their four-match road trip with the final away contests of the regular season, taking on No. 13 Northern State and MSU Moorhead on Nov. 4 and 5, respectively.
