USF Soccer outshoots Winona State but fall 1-0 on the road

WINONA, Minn. - Despite outshooting their opponents, University of Sioux Falls Soccer fell 1-0 at Winona State on Friday night. The Cougars fall to 2-7-2 this season with a 2-5-1 record in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Sioux Falls held a 11-9 advantage in overall shots and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal, but the Warriors' 7th-minute tally proved to be the difference. Lola Weiss was tied for the team lead with two overall shots, both on frame.

Jackie Montes opened the action with a shot on goal in the sixth minute and Alexa D'Acunto's first of two shots sailed with five minutes later. Winona State's first shot ended up being the game winner when Meg Riebau's shot beat USF goalkeeper Morgan Perkins for a 1-0 lead.

Erin O'Tool added a shot on goal in the 31st minute and Brooke Jensen's 45th minute effort was stopped just before halftime.

Early in the second half, D'Acunto's second shot was saved and Lauren LaFavre had a shot blocked and a second miss wide as the Cougars continued to pressure the WSU defense.

With 10 minutes left in the game, Weiss fired two shots, but both were stopped by the WSU keeper. Perkins added two saves in the final minutes to keep the deficit at one goal for USF, but their offense couldn't break through for an equalizer.

Sioux Falls starts a three-game home stand on Sunday, Oct. 9 when they host Upper Iowa at 1 p.m. at the USF Sports Complex.
