USF Swimming defeats Augustana 136-125 in first-ever meeting

SIOUX FALLS – In the first meeting between the programs, University of Sioux Falls Swimming defeated Augustana University, 136-125, in a dual on Sunday afternoon. Led by Maike Doerr's three individual victories, the Cougars won 10 of the 14 events, including a sweep of the two relays. The victory is USF's fourth dual win of the season and third over a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team.

Doerr swept both butterfly events and took home the 200 free title to score 27 points for the Cougars. Ingelin Lima swept both freestyle sprints, winning the 50 and 100, with teammate Kyjana Webber right behind her in second in both races. Including the most impressive performance of the day, Allison Eppinga swept the backstroke events in dominant fashion, and added a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly.

The Cougars started the meet with a comeback victory in the 200 medley relay. After Michelle Hoffin, Brianna Lavelle, and Ingelin Lima's legs of the relay, Webber erased the slight deficit in the freestyle and gave the Cougars a narrow victory with a 1:52.54 time.

In the next Mackenzie Crane added four points with a runner-up finish in the 1,000 free with a season-best 10:45.36. In the next five events before the intermission, the Cougars would win four and take a 68-62 lead into the second half of the meet.

Doerr started the Cougar run with her 200 free victory in 1:59.44 and Webber took third in 2:01.29. Nearly hitting the 'B' standard in the 100 backstroke, Eppinga earned her first of two individual victories with a 57.45-second time. Crane added a fourth-place finish in the race in 1:01.73.

Lavelle and Hoffin placed second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke to add seven points for the Cougars before Doerr would win the 200 butterfly in 2:14.10, more than four seconds ahead of second place. Lima and Webber then closed the first half of the competition with a 1-2 sweep in the 50 free as Lima won in 25.12 seconds and Webber was runner up in 25.20. Karlie Tiede placed fifth in 26.26 seconds.

The second half of the meet began like the first half ended, a Lima-Webber sweep of 100 free. Lima posted a 53.88-second time and Webber clocked a 54.48. Tiede added a point in fifth place with a time of 58.11 seconds.

Eppinga was dominant again in the 200 back with a near-four second win, clocking a 2:06.97 as Hoffin took third in 2:15.05. Lavelle added another individual runner-up finish in the breaststroke discipline, placing second in the 200-yard race at 2:40.80.

Avenging her loss earlier in the meet, Crane erased an early deficit in the 500 free to record a split-second victory. Crane edged out Augustana's Emma Miller by .23 seconds with the winning time of 5:18.02.

Doerr kept the Cougars rolling with a victory in the 100 butterfly and Eppinga was just behind her in second. Doerr won in 59.23 seconds and Eppinga posted a 59.52-second time for runner-up honors. Hoffin and Lavelle added the final points in the individual events, finishing in second and fifth, respectively, in the 200 individual medley. Hoffin turned in a 2:15.14 and Lavelle finished in 2:30.78.

Putting the final touches on the victory, the Cougars dominated the 400 free relay, winning by nearly 10 seconds. Doerr, Crane, Eppinga and Lima combined for a 3:37.48 to seal the team victory for USF.
