SIOUX FALLS – With
Drew Guebert supplying 22 points and
Trevon Evans scoring 13, a hot-shooting University of Sioux Falls Men's Basketball Team moved to 3-0 with a 90-49 non-conference victory over UW-Superior on Tuesday at the Stewart Center.
With the win, USF has opened 3-0 for the first time since 2012-13 when the Cougars reeled off four straight wins to open the season. For the first time in the NCAA DII era, USF has scored 90 points or more in three straight games.
Also for the third straight game, USF shot over 50 percent, making 35-of-64 field goals for 54.7 percent. In the second half, USF made 20-of-32 field goals for 62.5 percent. The Cougars were also deadly from distance, making 12-of-25 three-points, including 7-of-12 for 58.3 percent after the first-half break.
For the 19th time in his career, Guebert broke 20 points in a game as he made 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-9 from three point range. Guebert, who now has 44 double digit scoring games, also had four rebounds and a block in 23 minutes of action. With his 22 points tonight, he has 875 career points.
Evans had his third straight strong outing for the Cougars with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and a block in just 20 minutes. Also reaching double figures for USF was junior guard
Aaron Rothermund, who had a career-high 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 2-of-2 from three point range. Freshman
Chase Grinde added a career-best 10 points. Grinde, who was 2-of-2 from three point range, had six rebounds and two assists. Senior guard
Jerrod Walton supplied a game-high seven assists as the Cougars had 25 as a team.
"I was really pleased with the energy we came out with tonight," said USF Head Coach
Chris Johnson, who picked up his 159th career win at USF and 175th overall. "We were able to get out to a quick lead and built on it. Along the way, we were able to play a lot of guys. Those reps are really important for a young team," he said.
USF, which had a plus 14 advantage in rebounds coming into the game, outboarded UW-Superior, 45-24, including 13-to-5 on the offensive glass.
The Yellowjackets, who had 12 turnovers, were led by Shaq Coleman with 17 points and four rebounds while Colton Williams added 12. They made 16-of-49 field goals for 32.7 percent and 8-of-21 for 38.1 percent from three-point range.
The Cougars jumped to a quick 10-5 advantage as Guebert opened the game with a three-pointer and Evans also hit from deep with 16:23 to play. The Cougars extended the advantage to 21-5 when redshirt freshman
Teathloach Pal, who had seven points and six rebounds, hit a three-pointer from the top of the key at the 11:27 mark. The Cougars continued to press the issue, moving ahead 34-15 on a lay-up by freshman Drew Mastiff, who finished the night with six points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
A dunk by Walton closed the first-half scoring as the Cougars led, 41-20, at the break. In the opening half, the Cougars used its inside strength (20-6 edge in points in the paint) and pressure (10-0 edge in points off turnovers) to build a 21-point advantage.
The second half followed the pattern of the first half as Guebert scored eight points, including a pair of treys, from 15:50-to-14:24, giving USF a 53-24 advantage. Later
Tristan Teichmeier and
Justin Taylor had inside baskets as USF led, 62-28 with 11:25 to play. From there, Johnson was able to sit his starters and get minutes for players off the bench. By game's end, the Cougars had a 47-8 advantage in bench points. In the final 10 minutes, both Rothermund and Grinde were knocking down three's and leading the Cougars to a third straight game of 90 points or more.
Next for USF will be a road non-conference game with conference foe Minnesota-Crookston at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18.
