SIOUX FALLS— Led by sophomore All-American
Cassie Wright, the University of Sioux Falls Swimming Team (3-1) again defeated city rival Augustana, 163-98, on Friday night at the Elmen Center. In three years in the NSIC, the Cougars have defeated the Vikings each year.
USF took the top spot in 10-of-12 individual events and swept the two relay events en route to their 65-point victory. Wright, who already has won an NSIC Swimmer of the Week honor this year, had another outstanding meet for the Cougars with three individual titles and a relay crown. Overall, six different USF swimmers finished with the top times in their respective individual events.
"I'm very proud of the way our team competed tonight at Augustana," said USF Head Swimming Coach
Chris Hamstra. "We are coming off a hard two weeks of training and performed at a high level at a rival's house. I am very excited to see what we can do at our midseason meet in three weeks," added Hamstra.
Wright captured individual titles in the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.68), 200 Backstroke (2:06.59), and the 100 IM (59.37). Already in four duals, she has won 12 individual events. Wright also anchored the 200 Medley Relay that captured the title in 1:24.76. The other members of the relay team were freshman
Elizabeth Spaans, sophomore
Chantal Kasch, and freshman
Ella Johnson were the other participants in the opening Medley.
In addition to helping the relay team to a win, Spaans took the top time in the 100 back (1:00.01), just edging out teammate Giavanna Bario (1:00.73). Bario also took second in the 200 back (2:11.54).
Kasch finished with the top time in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.56) as she defeated the second place finisher by over four seconds. Kasch also grabbed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.57).
Aside from swimming on the winning 200 Medley Relay, Johnson won two individual events which included the 200 butterfly (2:08.14) and the 100 butterfly (58.14).
Sophomore
Giulia Marcon swam the opening leg of the 800 Freestyle Relay which finished with the top time of 8:04.59, and helped USF to a fast start. Marcon also finished first in the 200 Free (1:57.30), was second in the 100 free (54.68), and second in 50 free (24.93).
Sophomore
Jenna Krahn took a pair of first-place finishes in the 50 free (24.80) and 100 free (54.55).
With three wins in four duals this year, USF will look to continue their solid start to the season as they travel to the Rochester Invitational on Nov. 30-Dec. 5.
