Joelle Thorfinnson, picked up a 6-3 win over U-Mary (1-3, 1-3 NSIC) on Sunday at the Denny Huether Family Match Pointe.
The Cougars, which was 3-0 in doubles and 3-3 in singles against U-Mary, are off to their best start at the NCAA DII level with a 5-1 record, including 3-1 in NSIC play. USF will continue its home stand next weekend with matches against Bemidji State on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25.
"We had a great bounce-back performance after losing to MSU Moorhead," said USF Women's Tennis Coach
Kevin Grebin. "I thought we had some really solid efforts in doubles as we won all three matches. In singles, we also had some solid play but lost a couple of tough matches. We are continuing to show progress but with a young team we have to remain focused," he added.
In moving to 6-0 at No. 1 singles,
Chloe Jefferies recorded her third 6-0, 6-0 victory with a dominating win over Lucie Bolibruch. Jefferies has won five of her six matches in straight set fashion.
Thorfinnson, who picked up a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Shanna Stevenson, improved to 5-1. She recorded her fourth straight set victory.
In her first collegiate match, freshman
Rachel Klatt put together a solid performance, defeating U-Mary's Julie Donnelly, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
At No. 2 singles,
Megan Quandt dropped a tiebreaker to U-Mary's Kelsey Lajom, 6-1, 0-6, and 10-7. USF also dropped close matches at No. 3 singles with freshman
Lexi Miller falling to Eileen Leong of U-Mary, 6-3, 6-3 and at No. 5 singles with senior
Cortney McCans dropping a 4-6, 5-7 decision to U-Mary's Cristina Bremar.
At #1 doubles, the Cougars received another strong effort from the team of Jefferies and Quandt, who improved to 4-2 with an 8-2 victory. At #2 doubles, USF's team of Thorfinnson and Miller improved to 3-3 on the season after edging U-Mary's squad of Leong/ Bremar, 8-5. USF's #3 doubles of McCans and Klatt edged U-Mary's Stevenson/Lisa Anderson, 9-7. The USF tandem played together for the first time to move to 1-0. However, Klatt is now 5-1 in doubles competition.
