USF Women's Basketball drops NSIC tournament semifinal to top-seeded Augustana

SIOUX FALLS - Making their third straight run to the conference tournament semifinals, University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball's season was ended by city rival No. 12 Augustana, 63-43, at the NSIC/Sanford Tournament on Monday night. The Cougars finish the season, 16-13, their fourth consecutive season with 16 or more wins, and they have won at least two games in the NSIC Tournament each of the previous four seasons.

Kaely Hummel capped off a special sophomore season with a team-high 19 points, reaching double figures in all 29 games this season. Jacey Huinker grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, the 14th time she has accomplished that feat this year. Mariah Szymanski scored seven points and Augusta Thramer added six for the Cougars.

Augustana (26-3) used their pressure defense to break the Cougars early, building a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter. USF shot just 23.1 percent to the Vikings' 50 percent in the first quarter, setting them behind 20-8 after 10 minutes.

The Cougars began to claw their way back in the second quarter, reeling off a 10-4 run to start the period. Thramer hit a layup and Szymanski connected on a three, to bring it to single digits, 22-19, then Hummel scored five straight after two free throws from Augustana. After Hummel's second three of the game, USF was down 24-18 with less than four minutes in the half.

The Vikings then scored 14 straight points and entered the intermission with a 20-point advantage, 38-18.

Once the lead reached 20 points, the Cougars never got closer than 17 points. Despite playing with four fouls the majority of the fourth quarter, Hummel scored seven points in the final frame.

Senior Moira Duffy had a pair of blocks, pushing her single-season record to 81, and finishing her career with 82 wins as a Cougar.
