USF Women's Tennis rolls to 9-0 win over Millersville

Cougars end two-match slide with dominating win

Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. – University of Sioux Falls Women's Tennis (8-3) ended a two-match losing streak by rolling to a 9-0 nonconference win over Millersville (0-7) on Tuesday afternoon at Salandan Courts.

The Cougars improved to 8-3 on the season, including 3-1 in nonconference matches, with the victory. USF won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and also had a 3-0 advantage in doubles.

"This was a really fantastic bounce back win for us," said USF head coach Kevin Grebin, whose team will face the University of Charleston on Wednesday (March 14) in Orlando, Fla. "I was pleased with the consistent strong play from doubles through singles. Everyone was aggressive on points and it proved out in the results of their matches."

At No. 1, redshirt freshman Chloe Jefferies improved to 9-2 after a straight set, 6-1, 6-1 victories over Katina Jones. In 11 matches, Jefferies has won eight in straight-set fashion and eight when the opponent hasn't won more than two games in the match. At No. 2 singles, freshman Megan Quandt improved to 2-9 with the 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory. It was the first time in four matches that Quandt has won a tie-breaker. Freshman Lexi Miller improved to 5-6 on the season with her second straight-set victory at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Kelsie Sanders picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory and moved to 4-5 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Joelle Thorfinnson's continued a fast start to her first collegiate season with a straight set win at No. 5 singles. Thorfinnson is now 8-3 overall, including 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Senior Cortney McCans stands 5-6 after her straight-set victory over Millersville's Lauren Weaver, 6-2, 6-1. It is the fifth time McCans has won in straight sets.

In doubles play, Jefferies/Quandt improved to 7-4 at No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 decision. Miller/Thorfinnson stand 6-5 at No. 2 doubles after an 8-1 win against Millersville. McCans and freshman Rachel Klatt moved to 3-0 with their 8-6 decision today. In doubles play, Klatt improved her team-best mark in doubles to 8-3.
