Despite a big night from Jefferies, USF Women's Tennis falls to Winona State, 6-3

Box Score SIOUX FALLS – The University of Sioux Falls Women's Tennis Team (9-5, 5-3 NSIC) won doubles but lost singles in falling to Winona State, 6-3, on Saturday at the Huether Family Match Pointe. Prior to the match, USF recognized senior Cortney McCans for her leadership and outstanding teamwork for four years at USF.

USF, which will host Upper Iowa on Sunday morning at 9 a.m., took a 2-1 lead in doubles but lost singles 5-1.

"We really battled tonight but were edged by a strong Winona State team," said USF head coach Kevin Grebin. "We really had a good start by rallying back at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Chloe (Jefferies) continued her outstanding season. We will try and bounce back on Sunday," he said.

For USF, Jefferies was dominant in singles, rolling to her fourth 6-0 6-0 win of the season. In the victory against Kaisey Skibba of WSU, she moved to 11-3 on the season, including 7-1 in singles. She has won 10 matches by straight set fashion.

The Cougars lost the remaining singles matches in straight sets.

In doubles play, the Cougars rallied at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles to pick up victories. Chloe Jefferies/Joelle Thorfinnson, who were paired for the first time during the spring break trip, fell down 4-1 to Kaisey Skibba/Justine Daane of WSU and tied it at 7-7. Down 8-7, they broke WSU service and then took control in the tiebreaker with a 7-4 advantage and Jefferies leveling a shot in the left corner for the match. As a result, they improved to 2-1 overall and now 1-0 in the NSIC.

At No. 3 doubles, USF's Rachel Klatt/Kelsie Sanders played even most of the match before Lauren Willkom/Caitlin Anderson of WSU took a 7-6 lead. Klatt/Sanders won the final three games to capture the victory. With the decision in their favor, Klatt/Sanders improved to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in NSIC play. At No. 2 doubles, Megan Quandt/Lexi Miller of USF lost an 8-3 decision to Kendra Kappes/Rachel Gantz of WSU.
