USF Women's Tennis earns 10th win with 7-2 victory over Upper Iowa

Box Score SIOUX FALLS – Led by a strong performance in singles, the University of Sioux Falls Women's Tennis Team reached 10 wins in a season for the second time in the NCAA DII era with a 7-2 decision over Upper Iowa on Sunday at Huether Family Match Pointe.

The Cougars registered their third winning season in seven seasons at the NCAA DII level as they improved to 10-5 overall, including 6-3 in the NSIC for fourth place. The six wins in league play is one away from tying the most in school history and set by the 2014-15 and 2015-16 teams at 7-4.

"We had a really nice effort today in a bounce-back victory," said USF head coach Kevin Grebin, whose team wraps up the regular season with matches against St. Cloud State on April 7 and Minnesota Duluth on April 8 in Duluth, Minn. "It was good to see Cortney (McCans) finish her career at home with a victory. Plus, this should be a momentum building victory as we finish the regular season with big matches against Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State in two weeks."

Leading the way in singles was redshirt freshman Chloe Jefferies, who recorded a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Shakhnaza Zhanatova of Upper Iowa. Jefferies won her third straight match as she improved to 12-3 in singles, including 8-1 in NSIC play. She now has the second most wins in league play with 12.

At No. 3 singles, freshman Lexi Miller rebounded from a loss Saturday to pick up a win over Lara Peco, 6-1, 6-1. Miller improved to 7-8 over and 5-4 in NSIC play. At No. 5 singles, Cortney McCans improved to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in league play with a straight set victory in her final home match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Breanna Heichert. Joelle Thorfinnson moved up to No. 4 singles and won to move to 10-5 on the season and 6-3 in league play.

In doubles, USF had a 2-1 advantage, winning at No. 2 doubles and with a forfeit at No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Miller and Megan Quandt improved to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in the NSIC after an 8-1 victory over Lara Peco/Lavanya Singh of Upper Iowa.  At No. 1 doubles, Jefferies/Thorfinnson dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC with an 8-4 setback to Shakhnaza Zhanatova/Anna Okolot of Upper Iowa.
