MANKATO, Minn.- The University of Sioux Falls soccer squad took on the Minnesota State Mavericks in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) action on Sunday, a match that ended in a 5-0 tilt for the Mavericks on their home pitch.
Leading the Cougars offense was sophomore Aundria Vargas who took three shots, two of which were on goal. Sophomore Kyla Gushard was the other Cougar to take multiple shots (2). Senior Lily McKown had the only other Cougar shot on goal.
Freshman Alexis Wemhoff recorded three saves while allowing four goals in the first 54 minutes before senior Brayden Paul came in for the final 36 minutes for a goal allowed and save.
The game remained scoreless for the first 26 minutes, but the Mavericks were able to get their first goal in the 27th minute and were able to maintain the lead onwards.
The Mavericks were able to get a burst of energy at the end of the first half, scoring a pair of goals in the 37th and 39th minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
40 seconds into the second half and the Mavericks added to their lead with a fourth goal. The final goal of the day for the Mavericks came in the 57th minute.
The Cougars will be in Minot and Bismarck, N.D., next weekend when that battle against Minot State and Mary.
