After recording the top 200 fly time in DII, Ella Johnson of USF Swimming Team named NSIC Swimmer of the Week

Johnson ranks second nationally in 50 fly and eighth in 100 fly after strong swims at quad dual

 BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Sophomore Ella Johnson of the University of Sioux Falls Swimming Team, who recorded the top time in NCAA DII in the 200 fly at a Quad Dual Meet in Bismarck, N.D., has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Swimmer of the Week, according to an announcement today by the league office.

As USF opened the swimming season, Johnson played a lead role as the Cougars defeated University of Mary (303-119), Northern State (329-78) and Augustana (267-141) in the quad dual meet. Johnson recorded wins in three individual events and four relays and finished with seven overall, including two individual and one relay marks which rank among the top in NCAA DII.

Johnson, who named USF's Athlete to Watch in the NSIC preseason coaches poll, had a big opening meet with seven total victories which included individual wins in the 200 fly, 100 fly and 50 fly. She also was part of the 400 free, 400 medley, 200 medley and 800 free relays which picked up wins. Johnson, who earned All-American honors at the DII championships last spring, captured the 200 fly in 2:02.00 which was a NCAA "B" cut and the No. 1 time in Division II. In fact, her time ranks ninth when DI times are included. In the 100 fly, Johnson captured the title in 57:08 as she registered the eighth best time in DII.  With a clocking of 26.31 in the 50 fly, she also ranks No. 2 in NCAA DII.   

She was a member of USF's winning 800 free relay which clocked a 7:54.57 and ranks No. 1 in DII. Additionally, she swam the third leg of USF's winning 200 medley relay which finished in 1:47.89. Other team members on the 200 medley relay included Elizabeth Spaans, Chantal Kasch and Jenna Krahn.  Johnson was part of the winning 400 free relay in 3:37.21 which also included Krahn, Giulia Marcon and Ursula Demarquet. Johnson, along with Spaans, Kasch and Marcon won the title in the 400 medley relay in 3:57.11.
