SIOUX FALLS— The University of Sioux Falls Volleyball team wanted to honor its three seniors in the best way possible on Senior Night, and that is exactly what happened when the Cougars beat the Minot State Beavers in their penultimate Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match of the season on Friday at the Stewart Center.
In addition to honoring the seniors, USF Volleyball showed their appreciation to the parents of its players prior to first serve.
The Numbers-
In the four-set victory (25-21, 25-15, 24-26, 25-14) for USF, the seniors had the biggest impact on the outcome. KaSandra Springer led the team with her double-double, registering 18 kills and 11 digs. Abby Feyereisen was right there with Springer, recording 18 kills herself, a tied team-high for the two seniors. Also leading the team in a category was Allie Maloney, who tied for the team-high in digs (13) with freshman Brooklynne Albrecht.
Also with a wonderful performance were junior Krista Goerger with 57 assists, freshman Hayley Fox with 14 kills, and Tiarose Nagami who recorded 10 digs.
Match Notes-
After MiSU got it to 5-4 Cougar lead in the first set, USF got to some hot-hitting with a 8-2 run, but were quickly answered with a slew of errors to make it a 15-14 score. The Cougars were able to win the battle by finishing the set, winning five of the final seven rallies.
The second set started as a back-and-forth affair, going to a 4-4 tie, but it was all Cougars from that point, running away with the set on a dominating 16-4 run to eventually take the set 25-15.
Out of the intermission with their backs against the wall, the Beavers did not start the third set the way they would have expected, but much to the benefit of USF, who were able to jump ahead 7-2. The Cougars held control for a majority of the set, getting to a 21-17 lead. The Beavers stunned the Cougars by heating up and finishing the set on a 9-3 run to cut the Cougars' match lead in half.
USF made it their mission to not have the match reach a decisive fifth set, and that was evident in their 13-6 start to the fourth set. MiSU made it interesting, getting to within four of the Cougars (17-13), but the Cougars quieted that momentum by ending the match on an 8-1 run to take the match three sets to one.
What's Next-
The Cougars will play their final match of the season on Saturday when they face the 1-27 Mary squad at the Stewart Center. The Cougars and Marauders start a great docket of home events on Ron Eiesland Court, having first serve slated for noon.
