USF Baseball drops final game of series to Metro State

After weather suspended game Saturday, two teams finished Sunday afternoon

DENVER, COLO. – The University of Sioux Falls Baseball Team (0-3) dropped a 19-1 nonconference decision to Metro State (3-3) in a game concluded on Sunday (Feb. 17) after snow and cold forced suspension of the game on Saturday (Feb. 16) at the Regency Athletic Complex.

With the setback, the Cougars lost their third straight game to Metro State this weekend. USF lost by scores of 5-1, 13-3 and 19-1.

In the game completed Sunday, the Cougars had 10 hits but scored just one run. MSU had 19 runs on 23 hits.

Sophomore Keenahn Coyle (0-1) took the loss for USF. He worked 2 23 innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a balk. Five other USF pitchers worked in the game. They include Spencer Dokken (1/3 inning, four hits, four runs), Matt Graham (two innings, four hits, four runs), Sean Nussbaum (four runs on four hits), Jacob Emerson (two innings, four hits, one run) and Dan Johnson (inning, no runs, no hits and a strikeout.

John Badgett (1-0) earned the win for Metro State, which used six pitchers on the day. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit in relief of starter Branden Dehority.

USF was led on offense by freshman outfielder Connor King and sophomore infielders Grant Lung and Ryan Meyer, who collected two hits each. USF's all-league infielder Josh Rehwaldt had a hit and an RBI. He finished the series with three hits and three RBI.

For MSU, Matt Malkin had four hits and three RBU by Draven Adame had four eights and eight RBI.

Game Breakdown -
In the bottom of the first inning, MSU picked up two runs, including one earned, on a pair of hits and two USF errors.  Chase Anderson scored on an error and Logan Soole also came across on a RBI ground out by Jake Kistaitis. In the third inning, Jacob Moyer doubled in Adame, who had singled. In the third inning, Adame hit his first home of the season with his three-run shot plating Kistaitis and Malkin.

After the game resumed, MSU put together a five-run fourth inning and added seven runs in the sixth inning with another run in the seventh inning.  USF scored its only run on an RBI single by Rehwaldt in the sixth inning which plated pinch hitter Alex Robinson, who tripled with one out.

USF will be off next weekend before playing Colorado School of Mines for three games in Golden, Colo., March 1-3.
